Did a search and didn't find this. I was originally going to buy the 5982 which is currently on clearance (mentioned on another thread) for $27.99 but my local Best Buy's "clearance" price was $57.99 (another one had it at $52.99...whoopty-doo..) Seems like a good enough deal, considering the 5982 is still selling for $59.99 on Amazon.com Oh, and do instore pickup to save on shipping, of course.
I saw a lot in stock when I went to check the 5982. If I can get the 27.99 for the 5982, I'll take that. But several stores I went didn't go that low at all. They offered me the display model for $54 - 10% which to me doesn't make too much sense. It will be better to just get this one.
Reminder, there's a 10% off coupon floating around. I got mine from the moving package.
I thought someone posted in the 5982 thread they found this new 5990 at WalMart? - looked in one of mine and didn't see any, their website doesn't show it either

Question from technically-challenged person who needs a new name-brand DVD player (not much luck with old cheapo brand player). I just want to play DVDs and CDs--the old ones I have as well as future purchases. Need something easy to use at good price. Is this a good one for my simple needs?
And can someone give me the answer (for the technically challenged) on what upconverting means? Thanks.
In for 2. This will be great with my Samsung LN40A750 40-inch 1080p

ok, i just went down to BB and pick up this Philips 5990 dvd player. $60+tax. The box clearly states the features: WMV playback, direct CD extract to mp3, and USB 2.0. The DVD manual from the box says (upper right hand corner) DVP5990/DVP5992. Hence, my assumption is 5990 and 5992 is the same (different model# for different retailer, my assumption). I also have the Philips 5982 older model of this one. I got this 5990 (haven't tried it out yet) hoping to play vob files from the ext hard disk (usb connection) as my 5982 player couldn't. hope this info helps.

UPCONVERSION: Converts 480p (standard DVD) signal to 720p or 1080i/1080p. You'll only notice a difference if you have an HDTV that is capable of outputting in 720p (HD) or 1080p (full-HD). Otherwise, if you output from this (or any other upconverting player) onto a standard definition (SD) television, you'll get the same picture as you did before.
Upconversion is done via built-in hardware. The Philips has produced some of the nicer upconverters at low prices.
Upconversion IS NOT HD. It is manipulation of a 480p signal to near-HD quality. For true HD, an HD-DVD player or a Blu-Ray player is needed that can play the newer "HD" discs. HD-DVD lost the war, so movies are no longer being made in HD-DVD. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are not compatible...but that is getting off topic.

Thanks for the info. HD is high definition, I assume? Don't know what my TV is other than Phillips Flat Screen. Actually just looked at TV to find model number, but it doesn't seem to be in a convenient place (guess you'd have to take it off the wall--no way). Don't remember what it is (and don't know where the manual is), but pretty sure it wasn't Blu-Ray (so sad for me!). I'm still confused, though, b/c I thought HD was the format all the media channels were switching to. (If you think my postings are floaty, you should see me trying to hook up the electronics and get them to work--usually have to beg or pay for help in the end.)
Thanks again, SpinControl. I'll go to BB tomorrow and buy if it is there. Appreciate it so much...
For those who don't have the previous model, this is a must have dvd player.
Honestly I do not regretting spending 59.99 on the previous model, it was well worth it. as a matter of fact, I bought one for my father and brother in law last father's day. Then for Christmas, we had a secret santa exchange and lucky me the person that i chose just bought a new LCD, so I bought him this dvd player as well.
this dvd player is totally worth the money...
Only bad thing about this is...that the dvd tray opens kinda slow, and if you loose the remote you SOL...haha

Interesting, according to Philips site the 5990 does NOT have usb 2.0
I wouldn't take their website for info. When I 1st saw the 5992 there I used the contact form asking when available? - they simply gave a canned email reply saying they don't know... nice, eh. maybe the 5990 is the US version of the 5992.

Don't remember what it is (and don't know where the manual is), but pretty sure it wasn't Blu-Ray (so sad for me!).(1) Blu-Ray is a type of high definition format for DVDs, so your TV would not be "blu-ray". (2) Your flat-screen may or may not be HD. Two types of HD televisions (before the gov't required that newer TV's come with HD-tuners). HD-ready/compatible (some are "monitors") = needs a digital tuner to receive over-the-air (OTA) signals HD built-in = already has a digital (ATSC) tuner built-in. The analog tuner in SD televisions is NTSC which will no longer work for powerful OTA stations in February 2009. Depending on when you purchased the TV, it may only be a monitor...requiring a cable/satellite box for reception.
Gertrude23 said: ...HD was the format all the media channels were switching to.I'd say that most will be, but regardless of whether the content is HD or not, the OTA signal will be digital, so people with NTSC only televisions will get snow in February. With a compatible basic digital tuner converter box (basically an ATSC tuner), the digital signal can be received by the box and then displayed over Yellow-Red-White (composite) cables. Some of these basic tuners will allow the signal to be sent over S-video, but most are composite. More expensive HD boxes will allow the signal to be fed via HDMI or component (Green-Blue-Red).
So, basically, this DVD player will play old DVD's in near HD quality. If your TV is hanging on the wall, then I'd bet that it is most likely (at least) 720p. You'll get a little bit of benefit from this player (but only if you feed the signal to the TV by component or HDMI cables).
If you have not seen HD on your TV, goto Circuit City or BestBuy and see their BluRay display. It's like going from a VCR to DVD player in terms of resolution "WOW!".

Hello there,
Does anybody know how to switch off upconverting on the 5980? I have a Philips LCD 9703 which is incredible when using certain movie dvds. However, when playing concerts the screen gets grainy. I read somewhere that switching off the upconverting (upscaling) on the dvd, and let the tv do the upscaling, may help out. I use a HDMI 1.3 cable.
Would be nice to know what is the different though... makes one wonder

I also was wondering what the difference was between the 5990 and the 5992. According to this post from another site, the 5992 has a full USB 2.0 connection, versus the USB 1.1 connection on the 5990 that is compatible with USB 2.0. Ah, gotta love those marketing folks. I will wait for the 5992.

Thanx OP...I picked up the 5990 at BestBuy for $58.71 tax and all using the 10% coupon. It works great..I have an old WD 40GB Passport HD, thought I'd give it a try without the power cord & this player worked perfectly. The USB had enough power to run & play movies from the 40gig HD. I will try out my WD 120GB drive later to see if that works too. This will drasticaly cut down on burning DVD's. Give it a try.

Did it play VOB (DVD movie) files through the USB connection without stutter? That would prove this player has a genuine USB2.0 HS connection.

Yes it did play VOB's without stutter. I tried out 3 different movies, avi's & dvix. They all worked.

Can you please clarify if you had to choose individual VOBs, or it it capable of reading IFO file? I use DVDDecryptor which produces multiple VOBs, and I am wondering if this player can figure out from IFO the sequence to put the VOBs together to play a complete movie.
So what IS the difference between the 5990 and 5992??

smrtrader, the 5990 does read the IFO files. I took a downloaded image file, put if thru DVD Shrink saved to usb drive and it played no problem. Another poster on videohelp powered up a 250GB usb drive (format to FAT32 with swissknife). check the link....5990 Forum

I only kept some good moives on HD because I only have 4g DVDs and that means heavy shrink and lose quality.
Thanks for the heads up. Got it for $50.99 + tax = $55.20... but they took longer than 1 minute to give me the thing so they credited me $10 (as says in the confirmation e-mail). I've been looking to get the 5982 for a while, but couldn't find any on clearance in my area. Glad I waited.
I was a little confused after seeing what Philips' website says about the 5990's usb, but if people are having good lucking playing various files with different hard drives, then I'll take their word for it.
the website says backorder, which may be an issue for some...for me the stupid cashier didn't want to click on the 'add to cart' button so I had to return home and print it out...
confirmed that VOBs (didnt test split vobs), Avis and DivX play great from my memorex traveldrive. Player recognizes my 3.5" WD ext. enclosure, but can't read HDD on a home-made 2.5" drive w/no power (which could be the issue).
now we just need a hot deal on a 8gb thumb drive!
*edit* Success with the 2.5" drive! just had to format to fat32...the player will not read ntfs. No stutter and ffd works great.
There's a firmware update to enhance usb playability - available at the philips website

thanks for the firmware link. I've had my 5990 still unopened for a cpl wks now, one of these days I'll open and play... dread going back of the ent.center cable mess to unhook old/rehook new
Corsair are my fav USB, but on the cheap can't beat 8GB A-DATA PD9 for $27.99 free ship - dunno why FW won't allow a link to that site

Two biggest improvements WMV support and USB2."
I've seen that this post and others on this thread say the 5990 plays WMV files, but on the WalMart website WMV is not listed as a playback format.
"Certified for enhanced playback of DivX videos. Plays DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG digital camera photos. Plays CD, (S)VCD, DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW. Easy to use USB Direct plays photos and music from USB flash drives."
