It is only $5 more at Frys.com here + $8 S&H and no sales tax for most. With gas at 4$/gal and local sales tax applying to Fry's B&M purchases for most it works out to the same net price purchasing in-store or online

There is also no sales tax in Oregon and Fry's is in OR.

It's more complicated than that, you really need hardware decode of video plus a load of CPU. And then there's HDCP...

Use the program at this link to check out your machine. You need to see pretty much all green if you want to play BluRays.

Haven't got a Blu-rom yet, but I'm playing back HD-DVDs (ripped to server via Xbox360 drive) using a p4 3.2ghz and an 8500GT with HDCP support. Key is the video card as it really unloads the CPU.

If Fry's would expand, I'd pick this up.

I'm playing BD disks on a pentium 4 2.8ghz machine with a Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO video card without any skipping. The AVIVO technology on the ATI card takes a huge load off the CPU.

Do you have the PCI-e or AGP version of Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO? How much RAM on the motherboard?

My cpu and card (Celeron D 330 2.66 ghz & Visiontek ATI Radeon 512mb HD 2600 AGP) is inadequate in playing BD movies. It's so slow and the audio skips; like watching a slideshow. I might have to upgrade to prescott 3.0 since you can view them with pentium

My guess is the Celeron D is the limiting factor there, or the software handling your BD playback is not using the hardware for decoding like it's supposed to.

yeah i mean 2.4ghz core2duo can soft decode with powerdvd or use a ATI 2600? geforce 8600GTS and it will do fine on any decent machine.

if you want get anydvd HD you can then transcode the movie down in res if you want.
