This seems to be a decent price for a Momentus 5400.4 laptop drive, lowest price on Newegg for same drive was > $100.

Maxtor OneTouch Mini 4 - 250GB $88
12% coupon, expires Monday (5/26)

The external case is really easy to open, and the drive inside is the Seagate ST9250827AS.

The one I got (P/N 9NR2A4-590, Product of China) didn't come with a Y cable.

Thanks OP, in for 1!

I got one but want to make sure it really is SATA before opening.

The box says STM902503OTA3E1-RK (same # as the BB link OP provided), PN is 9NR2A4-590.
Now Seagate's site says the following: Seagate info

STM=Maxtor
9=2.5"
0250=250 Gb
3=8 MB cache
OT=onetouch
A=ATA (versus AS=SATA)
E1=USB
RK=retail kit

I am confused... I want to replace my 80 GB SATA drive in my lappy. Can somebody confirm that it really IS a SATA drive?

Well, I got one today, opened the case and confirm that MINE was a sata drive. I wish I could guarantee what you'll find when you open yours. "Life is a box of chocolates...." Good luck though.

Opened my case and I also have a Seagate "AS" SATA drive

Just cracked mine open and swapped out the drive. Yes, as the OP states, the drive is SATA. It is not PATA/ATA.

Well perhaps "cracked" was a poor choice of words there. I did carefully use a small mini-flathead screwdriver to pry up the sides and eventually the case came apart. The case uses slotted tabs to hold the two halves together all around the edges.

It definitely IS SATA. the number you want to go by is NOT the P/N (part number), it's the model number (STM902503OTA3E1-RK), which breaks down as follows-
STM = Maxtor
9 = 2.5" form factor
0250 = 250Gb capacity
3 = 8MB cache
OT = one touch
A3 = secret Seagate code (marked as 'Reserved" in the chart you linked to)
E1 = USB only interface
RK = retail kit

For some reason under the FAMILY category (which in this case is OT for One Touch) there is an option for internal drives (which would be N1 = internal drive kit, despite the fact that the chart itself is labeled EXTERNAL DRIVES), hence the options for ATA or SATA under interface.

Yes, I used a small miniature screwdriver to pry open one side just a little, then did the same with the adjoining side. Eased a little bit more each time and it eventually popped, but remember, it is plastic and one forceful wrong move with too much pressure and crack!

Thanks OP got one!

I got one too... and I have problem with it.. After it was recognized, I tried to unplug it.. but win. was saying that cannot unplug because some software was running.. (I did not saw anything... that is running from this HDD) so I unplug the usb cable... and since that time win. cannot recognized it...
Now I was wondering get $ back or exchange for another one.. Guy's any experience with removing HDD by simple unplugging usb cable..? Are other HDD sensitive for that hard unplug ....?

Never unplug USB drives without first disconnecting it on your systray. Not saying you cant or something bad will happen but if it did, you might not even know it until it really mattered so just don't. Let Windows close it out by clicking on the USB icon on the systray and disconect it before you unplug any USB hard drive, flash drive, etc. It's just good policy.

Oh, almost forgot, got in for one while the coupon is still good. Considering I just used up another 160GB for around the same price that sat for about 6 months, the 250GB should come in handy in about 6 months.

If everything else fails just shut down windows. That will force whatever files might be stuck open to close. Just unplug the drive after windows has shut down and you can avoid this type of problem.

what is Y-power cable. Will this drive work with dvd-players that do not supply power?

Thanks OP. Going in my laptop!

Thanks OP, cracked it open for my PS3. For those who want to reuse the old drive...use Swissknife to format it first to something windows can view. Wasted 20 minutes plugging it from one computer to the next, plus other useless steps. After 10 mins of googling useless posts (laughing at those who have non-usable drives)...found the correct info.

As for the dvd player....My 5960 wouldn't read my 60GB Simpletech...so i'm thinking it won't read something so big either. I could be wrong tho, haven't tried it.

Lastly...is Seagate / Maxtor the same??? Inside my drive was a Seagate 2.5 SATA drive
