Okay, I used the same coupon code on the base configuration upgraded to the 512MB nVidia 8800M GTS for a new total of $1488.74 (pre-tax). Not gonna buy it, just curious.
I'd like to see a picture of this laptop next to an Apple Macbook Air.

At this point is it still legal to call it a laptop? Maybe "portable desktop" or something, but come on -- laptop!?!

wow.. I had no idea there was such a thing as an anti-portable laptop. I can't seem to envision a target market for something like this, who wants to carry a laptop this big? Not trying to troll, or diss the deal (it looks like a good price.. considering) but can someone chime in as to the target market for something like this?

There's a huge market for this type of thing for 3D graphics demos. If you need to travel around giving presentations with a heavy duty video card and monitor with high resolution and can't depend on giving the demo on some other company machines then this is your best bet. People used to carry around vacuums and other appliances all day long selling door to door, so how hard is it to carry a a 15lb piece of machine from one point to another.

Well it will be good for anyone not willing to buy desktop but at the same time dont want smaller screen of laptop. Instead of using docking station to connect laptop to LCD it will be more convenient solution to use this portable desktop less mess of wires floating around. Good thing is you can easily move this in your home (forget about taking it outside unless you've someone else hauling it for you).
I travel with my 11lb 17" laptop all the time and never have any issues. Then again, I'm tall guy so what's an extra 11lbs strapped to my frame?
This is a nice machine and I would contemplate it if I could justify the cost. When you need the screen real estate, you need the screen real estate. As a technical writer, I even feel limited only having a dual monitor set up at my desk at times. When your dealing with markups, engineering drawings, parts lists, etc. and trying to write a book at the same time there's never such a thing as too much monitor. There's a real market for these laptops for people like me.
Wish this was a deal on the Dell one with the handle...that beast is slick as all get out.

This was a popular choice during the FW Laptop giveway.

please notice that if you need resolution 1920X1200, you have to pay 200 more.
rather buy small screen laptop with bigger LCD monitor to fullfill both purpose (mobility and bigger screen) and u can still save alot.

Also LAN gamers. You don't need to carry around or have the host provide an extra keyboard or monitor for you.
Whew!!! Just buy the XPS One for $800 from outlet and carry that around. Probably the same weight anyway.

Target Market?!?!?!?! Come on now! Portability around the house! You're not tied to your fricken desk and yet you get a 20" screen! On the couch, porch, outside, wherever! That's why I bought my 17" from Dell which I may sell and buy this. $1350!

Exactly, that is why I am thinking about getting this as a Father's day present to myself. I have a Lenovo tablet which I use on the couch, but I never get anything done because of its size. With this I can be productive while on the couch.

So if I buy this I can finally convince my spouse I'm productive while I'm on the couch? If so this might be the deal of year. I mean how can you put a price on that?

You got the order wrong! I have a tablet that I use outside home and a 17" that I use at home Desktop replacement notebooks make for very convenient home use! I would be all over this one except the price with a decent config (T9300 and higher resolution at least and perhaps the graphic card upgrade) is still too high. The base config is good if you're a casual user but then a casual user normally doesn't pay that much for a laptop.

If you get the HDX for use "on the couch" at best the only thing you are going to produce is fried nuts if you use it in your lappie or even worse a fire as you watch you HDX set you couch ablaze. The HDX series gets EXTREMELY hot very quick. The bottom and left side can literally get hot enough to cause burns on your skin. If you don't believe it, go to your local Office Depot and ask them to show you the critical product alert memo HP sent Office Depot concerning leaving the HDX on overnight in their stores.

I think these days its recommended that you always put something between you and a laptop no matter which one you're using. Even with my M1330 which generally runs pretty cool, i take no chances down there. Too many reports of people getting burns and frying their future kids in the process. For something this big, I would guess you'd generally use it on a coffee table or at the very least you could get a TV Mate tray and set this on it.
Just noticed that you could probably reduce the weight of this thing by removing one of the hard drives. It comes standard with 2x 120GB hard drives. You could probably sell off both and upgrade the drive to 320GB with the money you make, and you'd have a lighter machine. Not sure if that would make it kinda lopsided, but can't hurt to try.

Here is a picture of what it looks like when it is on your lap.
Thanks for the responses. Not something I would want to carry around, along w/ all the other crap I carry, but to each their own. I carry a Macbook and Thinkpad T61p in and out of work every day (my 15.4" thinkpad actually has a higher resolution than this) and I still come in under the weight of this thing. Only take the macbook to meetings though, I get some suprised looks when I bring my black macbook into a room full of thinkpads.. would love to see peoples faces if I walked in and plopped this behemoth on the conference table Don't get me wrong, I love the extra screen real estate, which is why I have a 22" flat panel at work and 24" at home to do dual displays, but unless you're traveling to do live 3d model rendering or something.. and don't want to use a projector or external display (as in you are doing a demo for a very small audience.. like 1 person), I still don't see this appealing to much beyond a small niche market.
btw..
I don't see how carrying vaccums that you're selling door to door up to ppl's door is relevant to carrying this around.
