I haven't researched the question in a while, but when I last looked the consensus seemed to be that a dual-core cpu with a high clock was preferable to a quad-core cpu with a lower clock for gaming in that no games out there are taking advantage of the two extra cores offered in quad core chips.
Not sure if that's still true or not - of if it was even correct when I read it...
Anyway, unless I want to replace my MSI K9N SLI Platinum (getting close, just not there yet) I'm stuck with dual core cpus for a while longer. MSI kind of screwed us K9N owners when they revealed that the mobo would not support the AMD's quad chips.
This is a good cpu if you want to put off upgrading your motherboard for a while longer.
Good post. There is also this x2 5000+ Black Edition for $72 shipped with code EMCAGBABF. Not as much cache as OP's but should hit 3 GHz and more. No HSF. Price is roit.
with a good HSF, it can be OCed to 3Ghz+ easily, since the multiplier is not locked. It is a very good choice if paired with 780G motherboards for IGP solution.

The ATI IGP chipset(s) (780GX/790GX) are all conquering right now. It uses alot less juice than nVidia (and Intel but they don't do AMD processors oh). Some new boards add sideport memory, which is 64MB/128 MB of DDR2 or DDR3 for direct video buffering right next to the Northbridge. It's said to improve IGU performance by double digits.
Too bad we can't get it paired with the Cell BE. Then you would have something that would kick every thing else around the block. 8X faster than the fastest Intel Roadrunner. These Windsors in the Opteron version are what is the dual core inside.
Would i be able to combine this with the radeon 3650 on a Dell e521 power supply? I believe it's rated at 220w, but many people say Dell power supplies can do much more than that?

I'm really getting kind of old in the tooth on these issues, and depend on folks more knowledgeable than myself.yeah I saw your post in the other thread...I think your best bet would be to check what the amperage rating is on the 12V rail...this is a 125W processor and the video card will probably take ~100W load...so you are looking at 225W / 12V = 18.75A just from the video card and processor alone. Other components in your computer will draw more current from the 12V rail so maybe a bare minimum of say 27A is what I'd recommend (If your power supply has dual 12V rails then just add the amperage ratings together, if its around 27A or greater I'd say go for it).

I replaced my E521's power supply with an Antec earthwatts ps and the difference was staggering in terms of power efficiency. The stock ps is simply not very good so whatever good you heard about Dell PS's don't apply to this model.

X2 5000+ BE LinkYep I built my parents a system with this processor and OCed past 3GHz with an OK hsf (zerotherm btf90 92mm). Could have gone faster but there wasn't really a need. realjellic if power consumption is a problem and you don't want to buy a new PSU I'd recommend the above processor, its only 65W rated compared to the 6000+'s 125W.

do you think i could run this processor and a 3650 on that power supply? sorry if this comes across as ignorant...Yes. It has 34A combined on the 12V rails so you should be good.
