This deal has been around for 4 to 6 months now. The price varies and every now and then they throw in free shipping. Reviews are quite mixed. I built 4 systems using this combo and except for the bad driver discs (warped), everything else works to spec. You can even use hi-density memory ($20-25 per Gb on pricewatch).

Isn't it like usually 80 bucks at Fry's for some AMD 4400+ or 5600+ with some ECS 6100+ mobo?

IMO for 40 dollars more you're more future proof w/ the DDR2 ram and the PCI-E slot

These do have a PCIe x16 slot which is why I was interested, and would work for those with plenty of DDR ram around. It also includes SATA and IDE which is nice for old and new drives.

I had searched for Sempron with no results, so I didn't know you (blueribb) had previously created a thread.

For twice as much, I could have 2 of these

True enough, but don't forget that most people build it and NEVER upgrade other than to add more ram or replace a failed part. For my money that extra $40 is WELL worth it because you're getting a dual core CPU. Still a good deal though.

Most of the country doesn't live anywhere near a Fry's. This deal is little more than half the price of the cheapest X2 or C2D combos you can get on pricewatch. $40 extra bucks might be well worth while for someone who sits in front of a terminal all day, but maybe not for someone on a fixed income who is just checking her email every couple of days and downloading pictures of her grandkids. And a Sempr0n will handle most things a normal person wants to do except high-end 3D gaming & HD video (and it might be able to handle that if you upgraded the video, but if your needs are that great why would you even look as a post about a $40 combo? You might be looking to pay more than that for your CPU fan). Sure, it will take you a little longer to boot up, open big apps and you may have to leave the machine on all night to encode a big video, but it will still work.

Can I use DDR2-4200 memory instead or I have to use DDR1 memory chips?
Also, Is the heatsink C1706 from ThermoSonic works for this cpu?

Many thanks!

DDR1 only, I'm afraid.

  • Your search - C1706 Thermosonic - did not match any documents.

I posted this because I thought it would be a good upgrade to an Athlon 1800XP+ that I have. My Shuttle AK-35GTR MB does not have PCIe and I was going to do a HTPC with a good tuner card (Hauppauge) and a good video card (Nvidia 6200 or newer). Since these cards remove most of the processing off of the CPU, and I believe the Sempron is actually a step up from the old Athlon XPs (??), I thought this would be a good upgrade for only $40. I would just take my old CPU/MB out of service and grab the RAM and hard drive.

Is this not going to be a good choice?

It was $29.99 after rebate with free shipping several months ago from Newegg.com.

So what? I used to pay $1.09 a gallon for gas, but that's no longer particularly relevant in June 2008, is it? If you have information that can presently help someone reading this thread make a decision and save money, by all means, please share it with us.
