Antec Earthwatts EA380 380W Power Supply $35 Shipped @ Newegg.com NO REBATES Archived From: Hot Deals |
What are other people's experiences with these? My experience has been 50-50. Got one with an NSK4480 case, which has been fine. Got another one as an RMA replacement for a SmartPower 350, and it failed in 30 minutes (RMA underway again).
The 430 is $29 AR. if someone wants to deal with a rebate...
I'm a big fan of Antec and the EA380. Both myself and my father bought one (cheaper than this, but after rebate), and had absolutely no problems. If you leave your computer on 24/7 and do not have an 80PLUS supply, your electricity savings may pay for this in 1 year. I think my average consumption dropped by about 30 watts when I installed this (versus an older Antec 300 watt supply). At 14 cents per kWh (which is about how much I pay after all is said and done), thats $37 per year. So do the environment and your wallet a favor if it meets your needs.

It's been great for me. I went from 121W to 92W idle, and I have my computer on for 16-19 hours a day, depending on how little I sleep (or slept, now that school is over and it's summer.)
It's nice to know that power is being saved, although the purchase of a new power supply costs money and affects the environment also. I just have the old PSU sitting in some other case.
Got it in January or so for $5 AR. It's unfortunate that it's this price, but still a good investment.. if it works.

Although the one you got failed, I think it's pretty cool they sent you an Earthwatts as a replacement for the craptastic SmartPower (did you request something different?). I didn't RMA my SmartPower because I thought they'd just send back another SmartPower.

Yeah, I thought it was cool that they "upgraded" me to an EA380, without me asking. It appears it's their standard policy, as a friend got an EA500 when his SP500 died (the SP500 is no longer in production, so there you actually have an option to get a NeoHE 500 if your old supply had modular connectors; otherwise, you get an EA500). The RMA process is pretty simple; you file a trouble ticket, they authorize you to fill out the RMA request, you fill out the RMA form and they send you an RMA number, you send the dead supply in at your expense ($7 for me), and they will ship out the replacement at no charge in a couple days after they get your return. $7 for an Earthwatts is a good deal, but mine will now be $14 ![]()
The last time they had it for $20 AR, a couple weeks later it dropped to $5 AR. Same thing with Trendnet gigabit switch, price dropped from $15 to $10 a couple weeks after a good deal. So wait if you don't need one.
I have only one problem with many of the cases or PSs from Antec. Out of 10+ antec PSs, only one failed and the RMA is pretty easy, they did send me a better version as well.

Have you asked them to reimburse you for the return shipping the 2nd time around? I don't think it's fair that you have to pay the return shipping for the faulty replacement unit they sent you...it only lasted 30 minutes! I wonder if that's because they send out refurbished units as replacements. Did you get just the PSU itself, or did it come sealed in retail box like in the stores?

No, I haven't. I actually RMA'd the SP350 back in March, and only last week tried the EA380 (yeah, I know I should have tried it right away, but had a lot going on). The EA380 came in a retail box (although it wasn't sealed like they are at Fry's), and looked brand new.
