I am not sure if any regional areas like mine have grocery superstores that sell gas along with groceries but I wanted to share how I am saving almost 70 cents a gallon on my gas and how I can get giftcards for 14% off.

NOTE 14% requires a CC that has 5% rewards for grocery stores like the Chase Rewards series (get both the Visa and Master Card) - After looking over current offers the best for 5% kickback may be a Citi Dividend Platinum Select Cardand in most cases i think you could have the card before these offers expire if you apply soon.

My local supervalue grocery store has giftcards with a 10% bonus (9% off) for an economic stimulis up to $1200 then they credit $120(however I have done it twice and will do it again ) I have bought this with my chase rewards wich credits 5% back and whenever I spend $100 on groceries I get 12 cents off per gallon. So here is my savings on gas:

About 3.80 a gallon
- .34 (9% off due to bonus on giftcards)
- .19 (5% CC credit)
- .12 ($100 grocery order disount)
= $3.15 per gallon unleaded or more if you buy disel

My local grocery store(s) sells giftcards for resturants and places like Best Buy - I can also buy those at 14% off.

Again YMMV but I wanted to share this with others who may have not taken advantage of these offers in thier area. definately worth it!

I stand corrected on my math there is a 9% discount on gas - Bozo007

3.8/gallon

that was the price last year

One advantage of the midwest, I am also closer to a refinery and a lot of oil fields. However job pay is also lower so it comes with the downside.

Math is slightly off since a 10% bonus on gift card = ~9% discount on purchases.

green for effort.

GAS IS 4.80 HERE.

I like how you think OP. Green from me.

OMG, MOVE!!!

OP, where are you and what grocery store you shopping at??

4.81 for me I have to buy 91 octane...boooo!!!! Central california. In two years we are going to look like Italy when the streets are overrun with mopeds! The ladies love the frugal man....maybe not!

I don't understand your post.

His regional grocery store is giving a 10% bonus on gift cards purchased at the store. He then uses the gift cards. The end.

This isn't even a double dip, as the gas rewards and the reward points come from the credit card, not the store.

This is one of the most convoluted posts I've read in a while.

The title should mention the name of the grocery store instead of Economic Stimulus Hack (which it's not) or Triple Dip (which its not). Admittedly, I'd be a lot more forgiving if I could get in on this deal ...

Thanks...I had seen the 10% bonus being offered on gift cards at Ralph's but I wondered how I would spend $330 (the minimum purchase) on groceries there since I only buy loss leaders at Ralph's and spend about $25/month there. But I might give it a try for the discount on gift cards. Although I've noticed some stores (CVS and Walgreens) cracking down and not allowing store gift cards to be used for purchase of other gift cards.

Green for using the term "Triple dip" and "Hack".

So we don't have to actually buy these GCs with an economic stimulus rebate check? Can we buy gas GCs with the store GCs? If so, this is basically $1320 worth of gas and/or groceries for $1150.

Here in New Jersey I bought $1200 + $120 bonus ShopRite Giftcard (4 cards with $330 each) with a copy of my federal refund check. However the store only accepts $1200 cash or debit card or check on this special deal. So I did not enjoy 5% reward from my Chase Visa. Another downside is that I will be charged a monthly fee if I don't use these giftcards in 24 months. Please plan ahead before you shell out $1200.

No, the fine print at mine said limit 1200 and that they need a state issed ID however I have not been asked for it once on both occasions I bought them - some places that do need a copy of the stimilus check or a printout of your bank statement showing the deposit. This is at least where I went. I have been hittg every place I can do this at for the limit (home improvement, grocery) since I leverage against future bills that are enevitavle. Better making 5% or 10% vs letting savings rot at 3.5% in fnbo and have to pay capital gains on that as well.

That's pretty cheap - it's $9.42 over here in Holland right now

Gas is $3.60 in parts of KS, MO and SC and under $3.80 in my hometowin in AR. If you are paying $4.80 in the USA it is likely because of your state laws. If we could lower gas prices in AR by a quarter per gallon we would vote out everyone from the city council to the president and everyone in between.

How much more are the people in your state willing to pay until you vote your state reps out (I assume you are in NY or CA). Alaska and Hawaii have market reasons for higher gas but in the continental 48 most of the price differences are political.

Here in Phoenix, the Kroger owned Fry's grocery stores are offering this deal. Some have gas, some don't.

Ah, but only if we got the benefits from those taxes that you guys do! If we taxed our gas that heavily, it would all end up in Big Oil's pockets anyway... yep, supply and demand... we supply money when they demand it!

Wishing there was a store close enough for me to do this ;/

Gas is $4.50/gal in Sacramento, CA.

Are you talking about Meijer? I bought $600 worth of giftcards to get 10% back but I don't remember Meijer being treated as a grocery store. My CC only give me 1% back on that.

Loosly related...

Pricechopper gives 10% off an up to 20 gall fillup for $50 spent. In some areas it is cumulative up to 30%. This is at participating Sunoco.

Only problem is that PC is more expensive on most items. I look for their sale items, and manage to get to the $50 mark about once every 2 months.

YMMV, of course.

Big Oil isn't really the main culprit in most of the world outside of the USA - in the UK over 70% of the cost of gas/petrol goes directly to the Government to pay for those folks on welfare etc...Big Government is the real problem.

I'm actually from the UK (Scotland) - a place I've always complained of being expensive after spending almost 7 years in the USA...

Now that I'm in Holland I find the UK to be a veritable bargain by comparison!!!

It seems that whatever you pay in the UK you just double the price here in Holland....the only things I've found "cheap" so far are ground coffee & those coffee pod things and bell peppers!

Over here in Holland the taxes are much higher than either the USA or UK so it's not just the increased gas/petrol prices.

Of course, if you like legalised drug use, freely available prostitution, laid back attitudes to sex & nudity then it's certainly a much better environment to be living in than "puritan" USA to say the least but I do miss my hot deals!!!

gas at $5/gallon is bringing the economy to it's knees in the USA because our economic engine runs on consumers.
Let's say we had had added a $2/gallon tax when we were paying $1.80. We could have poured that money into building an alternative energy infrastructure and been ready to "just say no" when big oil tried to raise prices. It's too late to consider adding taxes when the economy is already crippled and the money has already gone to dubai and saudi arabia. The only option now is low tech, mom & pop solutions, bikes and getting smaller cars.

Gas is $4.89 here, my vacation plans were completed ruined as I have better things to afford than escalated travel cost. All of my friends are staying "local".

I parked my van (took off the insurance too), insured my old econo box car, and got my bike out for all grocery store and mini errands.

My kids are actually loving the challenge of not using gas, but I wish my grocery store did sell gas, this is an awesome post!

I'm not so sure "big oil" are the ones raising prices to the pump price point we are witnessing right now - personally I get the feeling it's more to do with the market trading price of a barrel of oil and the inflated cost due to people buying into that market. (All based on some rumour that country x will be buying more/oil production catastrophy or similar scenario.)

I remember when the price of a Gallon of gas went up by 5c back in 2001 and almost choked on my Residence Inn breakfast when some lard-a$$ed Missouri soccer mum complained to the news reporter that she had intended to take the kids out for the day but due to the increased cost of gas they would have to stay home!

Even with the price of gas increase you are still streets ahead in spending power with all other goods (generally speaking) in the USA - especially if you are a savvy shopper and frequent the likes of Fatwallet.com etc

Anybody need cheap coffee pads or bell peppers?

Edit: Bloody Typos!

On the upside, $9.42 would take you from one end of Holland and back with some left over.

It would be nice to think so

Remember that for $9.42 I get to travel approximately 33 miles in my "bag-oh-shite" 1300cc Proton Persona "Si"(Malaysian built Mitsubishi Lancer rebadge).

It's slightly further than 16.5 miles each way

I'm seriously considering an LPG conversion (CNG for you US folks) which works out about the same price as your "inflated" gas prices and provides "cheap" motoring over this side of the pond. Fortunately my car is from the UK and not subject to the tax hike the Dutch authorities would inflict on the locals for using such a cheap and tax evading form of fuel - not to mention I have the steering wheel on the proper, right hand side of the car too

Shop N Save in St Louis is doing same deal... lots of GC's to choose from
