My Nerdy self is in for one.

Can it tell you the difference between an open wifi access point and one that requires a password?

No, this one is for the nerds: Super Nerdy

Made in China?

Anything that has WEP/WPA or anything like that shouldn't show at all. If it detects any sort of Wifi it's almost useless. I'm surrounded by closed points. Well no confirmation on the site but for $10 if I had the disposable income I'd bite.

If this technology could be built into a normal looking watch (no lame WIFI on it) and detect open points it would be a winner. Who wouldn't like to know all the places where you can actually use your laptop?

Bored novice hackers? Illegal internet activities?

- Free girl repellent included!

I carry a wifi detector with me everywhere I go. Its called an iPhone

(Don't worry, most reasonable people would think so too.)

The description says it just shows a signal strength number from 0 to 8. AFAIK this would come from pure detection of a 2.4GHz signal - no way to tell if it comes from an open access point, a closed access point, a cordless phone, or a microwave. If you want more information from the signal you'd need to invest in a detector with more capabilities, like this:

Still from Thinkgeek, but actually displays info about the access point(s) it sees

same here, cept I use a PPC6700. I still don't understand the purpose of these. Such a waste.

For a moment there I thought that it might be made in the USA. Will the paint come off if I chew on it?

No need to chew! The lead-based paint will almost immediately seep into your skin and blood in case your are missing any from your diet. That feature alone is worth the price!

The purpose is to smell the BBQ smoke (see the signal) but the ribs (secured network) can't be touched
except Where big Mac and coffee are sold.

Now all we need is wi-fi detecting braces with bluetooth transmission.
