How to siphon gas from a newer car

alert mods

Some of those squeeze pumps don't work well or break quickly. A piston-style pump, such as the kind made for pumping fluid out of the differential (or out of the ketchup bottle) are a lot better.

A safe way to siphon gas out of a car is by pushing the hose in so far that a lot of it is submerged in gas and then pulling it out with your finger over the end to keep the gas from draining out. I haven't bought gas in three months.

This makes me wanna buy a locking gas cap!

I use one of these 2 times/week to "borrow" tankfulls from gas guzzling SUVs in the malls and retail centers. It works great and people driving gas guzzler SUVs can afford to "loan" me gas.
This is a good one. I have used some cheapo ones that were plastic and broke easily. This one has not failed to keep me away from the gas stations for 2 months now!!

I bought one, used it to start a siphon when my basement flooded. It didn't work- in fact, it broke and sprayed water everywhere.

Took it back, got another one. Tested it in the sink. Didn't work, sprayed water everywhere.

Took it back, got another one. This one worked, until the bottom handle pushed thru on the 4th stroke and ruptured the cylinder.

Refunded. Skip it, it's useless.

I certain hope you are all kidding...

Looking at this HF siphon pump --- it probably is OK.

I made a DIY siphon pump using a 16 oz empty peroxide bottle plus a length of flexible plastic tubing. I drilled a hole in the peroxide bottle cap & threaded the tubing through it.

I then place my gas can higher than e.g. my lawnmower ; thread the other end of the tubing submerged into the gas & then squeeze the peroxide bottle to create the vacuum. The gas flow starts & continues. I then disconnect the cap from the bottle and put the other end of the tubing into the lawn mower gas tank.

I've been doing this for perhaps 15 years or so because pouring from my gas can was causing too much spillage. This way I keep spillage to a minimum and most times nothing.

I also lately have been using this technique to siphon the small remaining gas from the lawn mower after I've finished grass cutting.

BTW as a side note -- my Snapper Lawn Mower celebrated its 31st Birthday this summer. I bought is new in 1977. Still going well. Looking for super deal on a new mower. But I can afford to wait -- my Snapper is getting the job done.

I have also used this technique to siphon gas from my cars' gas tanks into my 5 Gal gas can. This goes way back to the mid 80's when I had my 1972 Buick, 80s K cars, 88 Taurus, 94 Tempos, etc. However the newer cars have these little doors in the fuel pipe whereby it's almost impossible to thread the tubing down to where the gas is.

BTW NEVER use your mouth to begin siphoning gasoline. If the gas gets into your lungs it can kill you. I've done it before on occasion, but it is an unwise risk to take.

So you can use this DIY siphon pump and have it for FREE instead of paying $2.99 or $4.99 (plus tax). FREE is GOOD.

Good luck.

Get an old garden hose and cut off the female end with about 3 inches of hose. Stick this short piece in the fuel spout, hose end first. Thread your tubing through this. The piece of hose holds the little door open and away from the tubing and the female adapter prevents you from accidentally shoving the hose down into the fuel spout.

At least as of the late 80's, maybe earlier, GM started putting check balls in the base of the filler neck on most of their cars.
No hose can get past it. To drain the tank to replace a fuel pump, you have to disconnect filler neck/vent assembly and feed the hose through the fitting for the vent tube. It's a pain.

I've heard you can also take an 18" or longer 3/8" extension and force the ball into the tank with a hammer, but I wouldn't recommend doing that on your own car.

If you live in California it can also cause your eggs to have very weak shells.

I'd rather go for the $20 Ryobi drill deal at HD. Much faster and you can hit multiple cars at once.

Quick, someone figure out how many gallons of gas you will have to steal to get you to the hospital after the car owner shoots your dumb ass.

Forgot shooting.. that is a easy way out... I'm going to torch the theif.. with the stolen gas.. Boom! Muhahhahaa!

As always, remember a empty tank is more dangerous than a full one since what ignites is the fumes.

1. Universal electric fuel pump
2. Cigarette lighter adapter
3. Long piece of clear tubing, cut in half for each side of electric fuel pump
