As long as your phone is BT enabled, you don't need the ear piece; the sound goes through the speaker in the unit itself.

I would stay away from Nextar after two GPS's that I had to exchange and then then get rid of. Reliability is a BIG problem for Nextar.

I've had mine for more than 2 weeks w/ no issues. I look around and all the Garmin w/ Bluetooth were much more good (not great) GPS...Bad name.
