Bulk or not, I really hope they package these things well. I know Newegg's was (is?) cutting corners with packaging resulting in a lot of damaged drives. ZipZoomfly's return policy leaves a lot to be desired. With a 15 day policy from the date an item is shipped and 5-7 day economy shipping, that translates into a 7-9 day window to make sure the item is not damaged/defective.

If return policies keep heading in this direction, pretty soon we'll have a couple of minutes to test the equipment. Or even a few seconds. Here's your new drive, you have 10 seconds to return it. 10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... BZZZZ!!!! Too late, you're screwed

Still, ~$80 for a Samsung drive is pretty damn sweet.

Yup, Newegg packs bare drives like this very poorly, and if you return for a refund be prepared to pay return shipping and a restocking fee. Hard drives, when off, can take a lot of abuse...I think it's more of a compatibility problem on samsung's part that is resulting in the majority of "DOA" claims.

Just an fyi, I bought a couple of WD RE2 750 Gig bare drives from ClubIT a few months back. They packed them better than any other merchant I've ordered from in the past 20 years. I don't have a dog in the hunt with ClubIT, just had a great experience in the context of this thread.

I know this is a bit after the fact, but, for future reference, I bought one of these drives and the packaging was horrendous. The drive comes in a tight/lightweight clamshell fit into a foam box (about 3/8" all the way around), which, by itself would have been a good start if they hadn't just tossed it in a huge box, by itself, with nothing else, so that it could do some serious bouncing when thrown around by the delivery people.

I got lucky and my drive survived, but I would definitely think twice about purchasing a drive from ZZF again.

What is it with retailers and crap packaging for HDs? It doesn't take a rocket science degree to understand that these things can't get banged around and still survive.
