The carpenter at our parts assembly plant has proven to the management that SW paints give the best quality and longevity - I LOVE this forum!!!

I really love Sherwin-Williams paint because it takes a lot less to cover & it seems to be more durable. I have SW paint in my bathrooms & it's held up much better than the American Traditions in the living room.

I've heard that SW makes a brand of paint sold under another name at Wal-Mart.

I found this on the web: source

"The United Coatings subsidiary of Sherwin-Williams produces the Wal-Mart Color Place line, while Valspar makes the House Beautiful program, licensed from the magazine of the same name. Sherwin-Williams also produces the Martha Stewart line of designer paints for Kmart, as well as its Dutch Boy branded product."

And this as well: source

"Wal-Mart paint is made by United Coatings...which is owned and made by the Pratt & Lambert Paint Company... which is owned and made by the Sherwin Williams Company...(Which may or may not be the same products as is available in the SW stores)."

The paint that comes from SW stores is top notch and is used by the vast majority of pros around here.

I've used all the popular big box paints (Behr, Valspar, Olympic, etc.), and the SW paints are superior IMO. I'll second the previous poster who said they give good coverage. I just painted my master BR and it BARELY took more than 1 gallon to do TWO coats on a pretty large BR. It took me nearly 2 gallons of Behr to do 2 coats on my son's much smaller room earlier this year.

The consistency of SW paint just seemed better & thicker - it spread very nicely and evenly. I've not used Porter or any other "premium" paint brand so I can't compare them.

I went by my local SW store yesterday to buy two gallons of Duration paint. The salesperson rung up both gallons of paint and then tried to use the $10 off $50 coupon but the computer did not take it. He deleted the transaction then rang up things in this order:

1 gallon paint
$10 off $50 coupon
1 gallon paint
$10 off $50 coupon

This resulted in my getting $20 off for the transaction even though each gallon of paint was less than $50.00 each.

Thanks again for the coupon OP!

I reckon this is pretty good paint.... Pella uses Sherwin-Williams paint on their aluminum cladding. (BTW-FYI: If you have Pella products and need a certain specific Pella color, you can go to Sherwin-Williams and they will mix the exact Pella color for ya.)

Buy their top of the line paint and it's supurb (ie like Duration). If you buy their low end paint it's mediocre. Every paint manufacturer is capable of producing a range from low end to high end paint. The technology isn't rocket science. It's all in the ingredients and price points.

I also like Pratt and Lambert and Benjamin Moore. I'd avoid the homecenter paint lines like Behr (ie Bare), Dutch Boy, etc. The most expensive paint is usually the best value. Professional painters know this but homeowners usually can't comprehend this.

Only rich people can afford cheap paint!

I'm a painting contractor and I ALWAYS recommend SW Duration to my customers. High quality finish that lasts and environmentally friendly as well (low VOC's).

can anyone supply a current list of sherwin williams pricing? it seems like every time i buy (the same) paint it costs a different amount. i can't even find out what the shelf (retail) prices are to calculate the sale prices. i'm especially interesting in pricing for superpaint, duration and resilence. any pricing data would be MUCH appreciated.
