Thedebator, you might have created the worst deal post write-up I've seen in a while, but you did find a heck of a good deal. This looks like a great deal on a good drive (reviews say that it is a loud drive), but at $0.12 per GB, I've got no complaints. Very nice find and please try to give a more descriptive write-up of your deals in future posts so that others know what you're talking about without reading the subject line.

Newegg's reviews of this HD here.
If others don't even read the subject line, of course they won't know what I'm talking about. I believe my title says it all. I mean what else is there to say???
As others have noted - many recent reviews state drive failures.

It's a Hitachi rebate and every harddisk maker will have drive failures. I've have a few Hitachi HDD and none have failed on me. The "Deathstar" moniker was back when IBM produced the drives.

I've had success with all ZZF rebates. To each his/her own. ![]()

I think your advice now applies to just about all brands, as most are made in China now. I, personally, would rather pay 50% more for a hard drive made somewhere else NOT CHINA, so at least I could depend on it.

why would drives from china not be dependable?
I don't think where the drive is made has anything to do with quality or price. If HDs made in China are PERCEIVED to be less dependable by plenty of people, the retailers will try to sell the non-Chinese made drives at some premium, which at least by my observation has not been the case.
Racial.
Hey Cashback4me, then please don't buy any stuff made in China.

Sadly, my deathstars are more reliable than my seagates and WDs.

Dude, when will you wake up and smell the flower? I already told you in another thread that MOST Western Digital drives are made in Malaysia or Thailand and you still want to insist your ignorant argument here? Speaking from professional experience, where a hard drive is manufactured is not really a concern. But your continuing blanket statement that serves nothing but bashes against China made drives starts to show your only intention is to make racial flame whenever you can. Keep in mind that this is a moderated forum - more posts like this I can assure you someone will have you reported, soon.

That = true. H*ll, I've visited the Malaysia factory before.

I work in a data recovery lab, and this is what we always tell customers:
Instead of placing faith in one brand or type of hard drive or another, just buy 2 of whatever you can afford / or a good deal, and keep a backup.
There have definitely been more drive failures recently as a result of increasing data density, perpendicular recording, and cost competition.
We never know if a newly made hard drive line (and companies are always revising them every few months or less) is going to be higher than normal failure rate drive, until the drives have been in use for at least 3months - 1yr... and by then they'll already have a new revision that may or may not have corrected the problem.
We see all brands, all types, made in all country's plants.
Remember, EVERY single hard drive WILL fail.... PERIOD.
You never know if it will last 10 days or 10 years, and most of the time there is little or no warning before complete failure.
All that said... if I had a choice, I would prefer my drive was not made in china
But, with the exception of the Seagate 2.5" drives made in china, especially f/w 7.01, it's hardly worth mentioning.
And 2 made-in-china drives (with one used as backup) is 10 times safer than 1 drive made in ... heaven? Well, probably.
