This is a deal only for those who are in the market for unlimited cellular calling.

Virgin Mobile is advertising that starting July 1, 2008 they are offering unlimited calling with no contract, no roaming and no activation fee. The monthly cost is $79 and you can cancel any time without penalty.

Downside to the plan is:

a. Text messaging is a $10 add-on
b. Generally you must use a Virgin Mobile phone as they have custom firmware

This is one of the cheapest prepaid unlimited plans that I've been able to find. There are other prepaid unlimited plans (such as Cricket) however their coverage does not appear to match Virgin Mobile.

As you may be aware Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint wireless network.

Good deal for some people, but coverage in my area not the greatest.

IMO anyone who would save money at $79 per month talks on the phone too much.

Many people use their phone for business... talking to family... they use it to replace a home line... there are plenty of uses for unlimited talk.

This beats Sprint's unlimited voice by $10... not a bad deal. On the other hand, if you know how to work the system, you can get a lot of perks (read: discounts) through Sprint - not sure if you can on Virgin.

For some people - like myself - talking on a phone is a necessity and the unlimited plans are amazing. I welcome not having to pay overage fees monthly as I typically use between seven to nine thousand minutes a month.

Virgin's $79 is $79, no taxes. With a regular provider you will have about 20% additional taxes and fees.
