I don't get it. People use carbon fiber to make things strong and light. Those watches have a steel case, which is definately not light. If the case was carbon fiber and the whole watch was feather-light, that would be worth paying for.

So, why the carbon-fiber? I can't imagine that ther is much weight-savings there, and I doubt that it look is something that can't be done using plastic, metal, and paint.

I cannot even say for sure which part IS carbon fiber. I assume it is the dial UNDER the crystal? and if so, why?

I think it's the face of the watch, looks like woven carbon fiber. Weight savings is negligible, as mentioned, so probably just a 'look' plus modern sounding "carbon fiber"!!

I cannot believe I am going to hijack my own thread, but here is a Seiko automatic for under $82 shipped.

Many of the automatic Seikos sold in Japan (or Asia) only are pretty nice and expensive. Otherwise, I'd agree about the Invictas.

But the picture of the black one shows how the carbon fiber looks on the face; it looks woven.

It's the same reason they sell carbon-fiber stickers that you can lay over your interior dash for cars, and for most carbon fiber hoods; it's cool. It's the new "in" material for things, like Titanium is, so they put it on everything. It's lost its original intent, but people still like it anyway, so it remains a vestigial fashion like spoilers on most cars.

Personally, I find it unappealing, partially because it's a large-grained pattern, not great colors, and also partially because of the extreme trendiness of it. But some people like it, and they'll like this watch. I'm a sucker for brushed steel/aluminum, so I end up getting those things even if they're not "functional".

For varying definitions of expensive.. I think the arcturas/couturas are very stylish and reliable, for a >$150 watch.
