I know there have been deals on this model in the past (or very similar model) but believe $1099 to be a good deal. If you could use the 10% or 12% coupons and if you have some extra gift certificates laying around for $10 you could cover most of the taxes. I can't stress how much more powerful the 8800 gts is than the 8400/8600 series they throw in most laptops. if you're looking for a powerful desktop replacement I would recommend looking at this. Get a side by side comparison while running game demos and compare FPS. Pretty good buy in my opinion. comments?

OP, put price in title. Anyone looking for a "gaming" laptop will probably agree this is a good deal... I dunno, I personally hate laptops.

This is a very powerful laptop. Not for the ultralight crowd. Nice for those who want power to take on trips, friends house, etc.

Note, this is a 17 inch laptop.

A buddy of mine has one of these and paid about $1200 , they are big and heavy but that is the price you pay for the HUGE screen these come with, and I can say that even for most gaming this is a good machine. The graphic card installed is within the top 5 or 10 out there in the market without running SLI.

Good price for a gaming notebook

I'm rarely a tc'er but the resolution on the screen needs to be seen in person before you commit to this. 1440x900 is really too low for this size screen. Its like using a 14" at 1024x768. There is no way I would do this with the kind of resolutions you can achieve on screens these days.

I also purchased this laptop back when it was a great deal at $1250 (originally $1350). So far it has performed amazingly well with little to no complaints.

The few problems I have with it are the screen: Yes the resolution could and should be better, it's hard being stuck with a 1440x900 17" screen on a gaming laptop, but take a look at the prices of other gaming laptops out there with this computers specs (8800series 512mb video card, 4GB of Dual Channel memory, 320GB Sata Hard Drive, HDMI Out). You will probably be looking at close to $2000. The resolution isn't too bad though to be honest, it will ground you in games like Crysis, where if this laptop had a 1920x1200 screen, you may have trouble turning the graphics settings all the way up while still trying to maintin the screens native resolution of 1920x1200. The biggest gripe though is the viewing angle of the screen. We use this laptop at work to watch movies, with a couple of us circled around a desk with the laptop on it. If you are not too far off front and center from the screen, then the screen gets really dark and sort of a negative effect (sign of bad horizontal viewing angle). I definately would have expected better from a gaming laptop like this, but at the same time, it's a gaming laptop, and more than likely it will just be one person by themselves, sitting in front of it playing games.

With all that said, this is an incredible deal at $1100, and I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to jump on it if I was in the market for a gaming laptop or a very powerful laptop.

I have a 14.1 1280x800 it's small but it's a laptop.

This laptop screen is fine, since it's gaming mainly, if your going to do more, then use the Video Out for a larger Screen, because the 8800GTS is more than powerful enough.

I played on it before, and everything is friggin nice on it, if I didn't buy this desktop, I might have gotten this laptop.

EDIT: What the? Agh.

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

everything looks VERY good, except for the 64bit operating system that comes with this system.

the pro's of 64bit: increases performance, recognizes up to 12+ gigs of RAM (regular operating systems only recognize up to approx. 3gb ram), and makes the most out of your system performance.

the con's of 64bit: many games are not compatible with 64 bit. you're likely to encounter serious compatibility issues with many, many peripherals (older printers, scanners, etc) and accessories.

i used to have Vista Ultimate 64 bit on a fast desktop and two laptops, but compatibility issue created such a headache that i switched them all back to the normal Vista Ultimate 32bit. most of you don't have to worry about this because your system likely came with 32 bit. it's the way of the future, but not now. =\

I run XP 64 on my desktop and I haven't found a game that I couldn't run yet -- Crysis, CoD4, Bioshock, GRAW2, HL2 are among the many games I (have) played. Yes, the peripherals may be a problem, but IMO worth it for the extra 2GB of RAM, which reduces loading times by an amazing amount (trust me!). If you're looking to buy a gaming machine, you won't go wrong with 64 bit OS and 4GB+ of RAM.

The problem I have with this laptop is the processor and as discussed, the resolution. The T5550 seems a little weak to be paired up with an 8800 GTS, which is way too powerful for a resolution so low. I guess it would be feasible to output this to an external monitor with a higher resolution, but then what's the point of buying a laptop when you can build a PC with better specs for cheaper? Personally I thought the Dell 1530 with the upped resolution and 8600 at $1200 was a little more attractive -- I almost jumped on that one..

I don't know if I agree with this. One of the positive points of putting this screen coupled with the 8800 is that the lower resolution provides more FPS at the monitors native resolution. Example: when I plug in my Dell 24 inch, I would have to tax the card with a 1900 x 1200 resolution and my fps would be shot to hell. I admit that a little higher resolution may look a little crisper on this screen but I cannot commit to saying that it would be a better setup at a higher resolution. He makes a valid point for argument, but I have to disagree. 17" widescreen at 1440x900 looks outstanding to me and you get the added fps (minimal difference but not a negligible one). Just my 2 cents. By all means, go and look at this baby and compare for yourself. You won't get an apples to apples comparison at BB because this is the only laptop they carry with the 8800 gts card (at my local store). kudos for the debatable point.

Vista 64Bit is way more better than XP-64 which was half assed.

Vista 64 has a program to run things in 32bit, most gamers recommend getting Vista 64.

Can anyone find any good coupon stacks so we can post a lower final sale price on this laptop? I'm not good with Math...or English...or science...

I've been looking at this laptop since it came out a few months ago (and the 6831 before it), and $1099 is a great price. Like other said, some of the components are a bit lower-end but the one that counts for gamers--the GPU--is top-notch. You can replace the slower components like the hard drive and processor without much trouble to extend the life of this laptop. Any other gaming laptop you spec out with an 8800 series comes to at least $2000.
