Acer Extensa EX5620-4025 NoteBook Intel Pentium dual-core T2370(1.73GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 1GB Memory DDR2 667 120GB HDD DVD Super Multi Intel GMA X3100.

This is basically the same as all the recent $399 deals, such as the Toshiba or Compaq. If you can skate out of taxes, this might be a better deal for many of you. It is in-stock and the Newegg reviews are pretty good. This deal was mentioned in other dead threads, so I thought I would resurrect for people who don't want to jump through the retail hoops of buying at places like Best Buy.

$4 Fat Cash, so be sure and link through the awesome FatCash program.

OK, I went for a few.....
BTW, no sales tax

Upgrading the RAM on this machine is a pain, too many tabs that hold the back panel.

anyone else like me? i really don't like WXGA at 15" screens. i'd love this laptop if it was 14" and 5lbs rather than 15" and 6lbs

If you link it through Live search you will get 2.7% Cash Back. You must sign up for Live Cash Back first though.

one word of warning: Discover card does not give you an extra year of warranty. So, if you would rather save $20 (5% use of Discover card vs. 1% use of another CC that gives an extra year of warranty = 4%*$500) than get an extra year of warranty, be my guest. I would rather buy with a different CC.

Same product available through today at Circuit City for $399.99 instant, no rebates for the laptop.

Instead of waiting, I went to my local store, Gurnee, IL and they had plenty in stock, although the $399 price was not on the tag on the shelf but rang up at the register just fine.

The other free items are an option Lexmark printer, Router and Microsoft One Care (best option of the three)

Okay of the 3 laptops for $399 offered at BB, Staples and Circuit City which do you consider the best?

Based on the replies and views, it seemed that the Compaq - Presario at Bestbuy is the best. But I don't why either.

I know everyone has a bad story about some laptop mfg, but I heard a lot of people saying that Acer has gone from a very good laptop to one of the makers with the most problems. Any thoughts? Acer used to be a highly respected name.

The $50 0ff of $500 coupon, makes the Stapels item the better offer.

Please update the title. It is no longer $399, it is $499.

It looks like the case will break if you try to pry it, after removing all of the screws. The manual implies that you only open a 2 X 3 inch area, but this covers over half of the bottom of the machine. Has anyone tried to replace some of the memory on this? Were you successful?

Thanks.

I purchased an AMD model of this with a similar form factor for my daughter. I didn't up the memory but had to take off the same panel in the process of adding a bluetooth module. It *is* a PITA to get off and I felt like I was going to break it (didn't). There's no comparison to my Lenovo Ideapad Y510 in which I upgraded the processor (T2330->T7300). That was a piece of cake and I didn't feel like I was taking the whole bottom off.

All that being said, it is a decent bang for the buck and I wouldn't hesitate buying another Acer.

Flip over the laptop and loosen 7 _Philips-head screws holding the panel, they don't have to come completely out, just about 5 complete turns.
Use a stiff blade and pry open left side of panel, careful not to insert more than one quarter to one half inch
Work loose the left side of panel
Slide panel towards the freed left side and clear the 5 plastic tabs on the right side of panel.

You shouldn't have to break any of the tabs. Use a very small dab of vaseline on the tabs to allow easier disassembly next time.

Thank you so much for the information and picture. I looked all over the web for it (well I guess not ALL over). It's a shame acer can't provide this. I guess they would be liable when people broke stuff then.
