Just saw this at Fry's B&M, if you want a good, easy to setup NAS solution, you could not do much better.

Note that this is most likely for the first edition of this product:
My Book World Edition 1

As that is the version that I got in the store.

FYI, it is very possible to remove the drives yourself. Also, it is basically running an SMB server on Linux.

Also, here is some info on how to hack this product to your liking:

I think hacking it will technically break the warranty, so do consider that before you do anything.

These are one big POS!

I bought one, didn't work. Network card dead.

Called support, received a replacement Network card is dead.

Called support and argued about it for 30 minutes, sent 2nd replacement(3rd unit), network card is dead.

Yea, avoid these if you can.

Thankfully I paid $130 for it brand new so the internal dirve is worth that.

I guess YMMV on that one.

I know that the network card on these devices are not really up to GigE standards, but so far my My Book is working quite nicely. I have enabled SSH and made other modifications and I have certainly had no trouble transferring files onto and from this device.

It does seem like doing the extra work is for the "enthusiasts" only, but if you are up for some Linux admin, then I think for this price, it is hard to argue with a NAS that is running Linux Lite.

@Dealr - must have been user error after 3 of them wouldn't you think? One question, what did you have the NAS attached to? Gigabit Switch, 10/100 switch, or Gigabit smart switch? I had flakiness running it on a gigabit switch, but my 10/100 and my smart switch (I adjusted one port down to 100 full duplex) and it works great.

Do you know of any other devices in this price range? Next cheapest is usually about $400.

As someone that has been looking out for a small size NAS solution, there are some other options that you can look at, though you might wait a bit as other stores may be clearing out these My Book World drives (Edition 1). Here some other options you might consider:

  • Linksys NSLU2
  • Linksys WRT610N - very interesting, it's a router with "NAS" ability, but it's not out yet and obviously you will be a guinea pig for such a new product
  • Also, for much more, there are the nice Buffalo LinkStation solutions

It's not that it's the first edition, it's the single drive version.

I have bought 2 of these and they have worked fine with a few different 1000BT and 100BT switches. They could be faster, but overall I'm very happy with them.
