Don't know if this is nationwide, as Chicago seems to have some unique discounts on Compact Fluorescent bulbs, but the Ace Hardware in downtown Chicago has GE CFL 60 Watt replacements for only 50 cents apiece. I've tested these bulbs, and they are very good- no noticeable delay when you initially turn them on, with light just as good as the old bulbs.

When you say replacement, do you mean to replace regular bulbs, or bring in a dead CFL and they replace it with a new one?

I mean to replace regular bulbs. So this bulb uses 13 W of energy, as opposed to the 60 W model, for the same ammount of light. I call it a "replacement" because they use the same amount of light- society is just so used to the typical "60 Watt Bulb", that if you call it a 13 Watt bulb, it seems wrong. So the industry calls it a 60 W replacement.

Basically, this cuts the light part of your energy bill to a 1/4 of the original cost. It estimates a savings of $38 per bulb per year. They also only have to be replaced once every 5 years, as opposed to every 8 months.

Which downtown Ace location?

Also, i believe they save approx 38 as you quoted, but its over the course of the bulb's life, not per year.

still, worth replacing your bulbs. In addition, it gives off less heat, thus lowering your Air Conditioning bill.

I may just have to upgrade from my "Dr. Dre Filament 40W Bulb"

These were .49 each at the ACE in Mt Prospect, IL (Golf and Busse) and they had TONS of them.

The reason why they're so cheap here is if you are a resident of Chicago, they've been running a program to get 2 free bulbs if you go to your alderman's office. Since this program has been going on for a long time now, they may have finally run out.
