this is a good deal if tax doesn't apply to your state. for me, since im from cali, the Directron deal saved me a few dollars on tax, but I rather have the Newegg customer service

ya i figured. im just a little peeved as i paid the extra 4 bux for rush processing, and Newegg shipped the same day like promised. but then ups delayed my package so it ended up being a waste of money lol
I bought two of these a few months ago. You won't believe how quiet these drives are. Even a disk-thrashy operation like a defrag is whisper quiet.
Don't forget to check the jumper. I think they ship w/ the jumper in place and you have to take it off to enable the 3.0Gb/s.

I have 100s and 100s of GBs of unused HDD space that I doubt I'll ever use. What I'm looking for is performance. Any good deals on Raptors? Even 36GB or 74GB pulls are OK for RAID0.
Honestly, with the gb/platter density on the newer drives, they have the same/higher mb/s as a raptor. Although, the raptors do have better access times by far.

This is the best drive I've ever owned. Its fast and quiet. I would buy another but don't need it. Don't waste you time though writing a review for ChiefValue, as they never post it. I bought mine from ChiefValue a couple months ago.

WD640s perform just as well (in most cases) as the 36GB and 74GB Raptors. Plus it's quieter, uses less power and it's cheaper than Raptors.

None of the WD6400AAKS drives I purchased from Newegg were jumpered, but good tip anyway. According to this Western Digital page, a jumper on pins 5 & 6 would limit the drive to 150MB/sec (SATA I).

i'm preparing to be blasted for this question, but, what is a really easy enclosure to put a hard drive like this into, and, once you get it in there, and you plug it into your computers USB port, will it recognize the drive like plug n play, with a new folder added, or is it more complicated than that?

Any simple 3.5" HDD enclosure with USB would work. Cost anywhere from $15-$20 on up. It just shows up as a USB Mass Storage Device and no drivers required if you're using XP (or higher), OS X, Linux, etc. Sort of like a USB flash drive.

how can an enclosure have a ceiling for capacity, as long as its 3.5"?

I know some people have had 500GB IDE drives in that enclosure without issues.
The WD 640GB in this particular deal is SATA though so it wouldn't work in that enclosure.

Yep, like other have stated; an IDE enclosure will not work on these SATA drives. You will need a sata enclosure if you want to go the external router. You can check this thread for more details:
Never had a raptor, but my new RAID0 WD6400AAKS rocks!
I received two new WD6400AAKS 16MB cache HDDs Friday. I put them in RAID0 configured as d:\ drive. I have another RAID0 drive with two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250s 16MB cache configured as my e:\ drive.
As a speed test, I copied two 4 GB avi files from the d:\ to the empty e:\ drive.
Server2008 x64 showed sustained MBs/sec of 184-192. That's correct, both avi files totalling about 8 gigs were copied from my d:\ to e:\ drive in less than 45 seconds. I hardly believed it.
Copying back the other way after a quick format of the d:\ drive showed sustained 127 MB/sec.
Server2008 x64, Q6600 on a Gigabyte EP35-DS3R, no overclocking.
