I have been looking for an external drive and it seems that anything under $100 is a good place to start.

Here's one from WalMart for $88.88:
Western Digital WDH1U5000N 500GB My Book Essential Edition USB External Hard Drive

OfficeMax also has a Maxtor OneTouch 4 750GB for $139.99 (and a 500GB external for $99.99) and I have a code good for $30 off $150 online/phone purchase if anyone is interested.

OfficeMax deals are DEAD as of 7/20

For all those interested in the discount code:
The coupon says for phone orders mention offer #143101110706
For online orders enter promo code: ATB6N9SH6GS39Y73C

The fine print on the back(which is barely readable) says "Limit one coupon per customer" so sorry if it does not work for everyone.

If they send me any new codes I will post ASAP.

Good Luck

For what it's worth, the WD 500 is prone to failure within 2 years. My WD 400 just died after 18 months which I also read was typical. I also have the WD 500 which I got 11/07 for $100. Works fine for now. The Maxtor 500 had install issues with formatting the drive. I had that same problem with my Max 500 but after a few tries got the firmware to work.

Man... this is so true. My WD 400 just crashed last week. I bought it during black friday 2006, so its been probably around 18months too?! Data recovery is just ridiculously expensive, and I can't afford it.

I don't know if I should trust WD externals at all.

Anyone here have an external they've used for over 2 years that you would recommend?

what do you want to say? WD 500 is prone to failure within 2 years or WD 400?

I think a lot of WD externals are prone to failure in this case. Be it the 400 or the 500, the possibilities should be similar since they're basically the same type (My Book Essential Edition)

I never dropped or mishandled mine. In fact it was in the same spot for over a year, no movement, no traveling. I have no idea how an external hard drive can malfunction just like that when an internal my computer has worked for over 5 years with no problems whatsoever. Not even my hard drive in my enclosure has failed yet and I've used that HD for 2-3 yrs in a computer and 2 yrs in an enclosure.

Maybe standing a hd on its side aint so good!!!

Is the 750gb hard drive going on sale today? Online it shows $199 and the 500gb is $139

Umm.......yeah! That's why I keep mine flat (horizontal), and have not had any problems.
