One must watch Fry's when they make these FAR claims. I was there for a sale in spring of last year, and had to point out to the department manager that there were several software titles on a table advertised as "free after rebate" that were contingent on upgrade rebates, etc. - not strictly FAR. I would be hesitant to make this purchase unless I got them to adjust the price up to $51.xx, or got the manager's business card with his initials, assuring payment of the rebate by the store if it's declined because of pricing.

For those without a Fry's nearby - it's $30 AR at Frys website. Rebate form clearly stipulates $51 or more purchase price, but doesn't specifically exclude sales tax - so that could be the way Fry's is making the rebate work.

No, I believe he is correct. A radio station is allocated a certain frequency range by the FCC in which to broadcast, and it will hold one analog channel. But with digital radio, they can fit more than one channel in their frequency slot. For example, WAMU in Wash DC has one analog channel (News). But with an HD radio, you can pick up the digital channels, so you also get WAMU-2 (Bluegrass channel) and WAMU-3 (BBC, NPR, WTMD). With an analog radio, you get one broadcast, but with an HD radio you get three. (All three channels are at 88.5 FM.) I believe they were making channels commercial free to encourage adoption of the tech.
Got one. Not sure what to do with it. Looks like it would be an invitation to thieves to break in. Also, for those of you in CA, the head unit is designed to sit in a windsheild mount (supplied)... and we know what your state gov. has to say about those!

In order to use this device your existing radio needs to have an Auxiliary stereo input and many vehicles will also require adapters for the antenna connectors.

Fry's is VERY good about honoring the rebates that they advertise. I once got denied for something that I followed all of the rules on. I took my paperwork to Fry's. They made copies of everything and said they would take care of it. I ended up getting a check from Fry's and 2 days after that got a check from the rebate company. Not a bad deal at all. I'm confident that Fry's will make this one happen if it gets denied.

There are plenty of HD-2 (and even HD-3) channels that are different in Cincinnati. Cincinnati HD Channel Guide
Check you city's exclusive (and FREE for LIFE..guaranteed) HD channels here: HD Station Guide
...and, do you have a CD player in your dash? The FM HD's will sound close to that quality. BETTER than standard AM or FM.
Unless you think your CD sound sucks... you'll be impressed with HD.
And satellite radio is giving less quality to each channel, so that they can continue to fit in more channels.
Thanks to the OP of another tread I have just rented a car that happened to have an HD. The quality was amaizing. Much better than my regular FM and much much better than Sirius.

Yes, per the manual posted, you need auxiliary input. It could be front-panel I-Pod input too.
With HD you also get a lot of information (Song title, artist, album etc.) that you don't get on analog stations.

Same problem with the new over the air digital TV. You get a much better picture yet the programming is still crap.

BK Sorry checked the list again and the music that I would listen to are once again Clear Channel and Cumulus. 16 HD channels. Both Cumulus and Clear Channel are crap IMHO.Between the two, they dominate the market here in Cincinnati.Unless any serious competition comes to the area,I don't think they are going to put any serious effort into putting out a quality program. If they did they would start with commercial radio. I don't want to knock HD itself, just the local Cincinnati market. Larger cities will have a much broader selection except when it comes to Clear Channel and Cumulus.

what does "leaving mine back" mean? Taking mine back?
Much better IMO. No worry about purchase price threshold.Probably. But if you have a factory fitted (and custom size) radio in your dash (as most new-ish cars now have) this won't be a big use to you.

this standard will die. don't invest in it. OK, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I had installed an HD head unit in my previous car and loved the added stations (with very few to no commercials as of a year ago) and found the music (while not HiDef) to be much more pleasing since there was no static.

FM has no static, either. it has signal dropouts and multipath and so will HD since its still just a subcarrier of either AM or FM.
HD runs at 1/10 (or very very low) power. expect problems with that whole design.
the audio bitrate is BELOW what most people use for mp3. I can't imagine anyone calling that QUALITY sound. its on par with FM in terms of frequency response, but FM is pure analog and will probably have less artifacts since it has NO digital compression. old style analog compression was ok; but aggressive digital compression is no good at all.

BK No reason to put me down for my decision not to invest any money in a format dominated by two of the largest mass entertainment conglomerates in the area(Clear Channel and Cumulus).Including Bonneville makes it three. To the OP I apologize for participating in a thread hijack. It should have been about the deal and not the programming. You can listen to HD stations owned by Clear Channel here.

the product IS the programming, just as much as the audio quality.
the audio quality is lower than mp3 (plus it comes with advertisements, like normal radio!) ;(
the programming is (cough) what we already have today, just more sliced, diced, crapola. with ads.
WHY this would be a good deal, I have no idea. its just FM or AM - but digital. big deal (rolls eyes).
now, if this was 20bit audio that was close to lossless, THEN we'd have a real good standard to rally behind. but lossy mp3 quality with ads - PUH-LEEZE! not worth even the hassle of an install.
ATTENTION! I called the rebate center [(563) 259-0100] and they said it would probably automaticlly get regected since purchase price is below $51 before tax. The nice lady on the phone said if I mailed it to her directly they would make sure that the rebate is valid and she gave me her PO BOX, I suggest anybody that hasn't sent in the rebate to do the same!
