Where ya call'in from ? I'll have to check minez out.

I've been thinking about getting one of those portable style A/C's. They run $300-$400 so 75% off would be nice. Anyone have any comments/experiences to share with a portable style unit ?

I got mine last month only at 10% off. I wonder if they will PM to clearance prices. If not, I will just buy one and return it with the other receipt.

Yes, I would like to know the samething, any of these are portable styles and any comments?

Great deal if you can get it. Definitely regional. I was at the Torrance, CA HD last night looking at Patio Furniture. They had 20% off selected sets.

A portable A/C unit has the heat exchanger inside the house with a hose to vent it to the outside via a window or sliding door. In my opinion an indoor A/C has the cooling of 1/2 of the window version at the same rating due to the extreme heat that has to be vented outside. They tend to be louder as well due to venting, but they are worth 75% off if you can get it for that.

We used a portable one for about a month or two and it sucked. It was one of those $300 units from Home Depot a few years back. As stated, the cooling capacity is much lower than listed, and it makes a ton of noise. Another annoyance is that it has a reservoir in the bottom that collects water and must be emptied regularly.

my store didn't have any AC's on clearance.

If we post our locations this will be a better thread since it is a YMMV.

Just as a FYI, I checked the Leominster, MA Home Depot and they didn't have these A/C's on clearance yet. They had an 8000 BTU LG for about $169, not a deal. Any idea where this is located OP?

OP, when you check prices online for the items you have listed (having picked your "local Home Depot located in central Massachusetts" as the store) -- do they show the discounted price? .. or is it in-store pricing only?

I suspect it's the former, given that you've listed the SKUs .. if so, no deal in Brewster, NY store.

I have two portable ones and they work way better than the window ones.

1. They are quieter than my window ones.
2. They don't make you open your window all the way up if you have sliding windows
3. You can move them to another room for a party in about 5 minutes

We have a portable one in the attic, since that is where my step-daughtewr just HAD to have her room. I put 2 skylights in because there was only 1 tiny little window otherwise. We could not get a window unit because the window is THAT small, so we tried one of these protables. I would have to say it works pretty well, but is nowhere near the cooling we would get from an in-wall unit. I had to rig a contraption to hold the water drainage hose and the air hose at the window, since the included were WAY to long to fit.

Oh, the only thing that does happen every now and again is that it will ice up, sometimes I think it just works too hard and freezes the condensation before getting rid of it and the other times I think it is because noone can tell when a filter needs cleaned except for me

Mike

Oh forgot - we paid around $600 or $700 for this one and it is as loud as a window unit.

I continue to follow this thread, and the reports on Portables are helpful (thanks!).

It sounds like these would be "useable" for my purposes as an adjunct to my central air. I'd keep the rest of the house at a livable 78 and have the portable run at night to maybe 74-75 range in the bedroom.

And, of course, if I could find one at %75 off I think it would be very little at risk if my experience was sub-par so to speak. Seems like the 75% off at HD is a bit spotty ?

I called the Worcester and Shrewsbury, MA Home Depots yesterday and neither said that they had A/C's on sale or clearance. The only one left in central MA is in Marlboro, which I haven't contacted yet. I plan on stopping by the HD in Shrewsbury today just to make sure, so I'll post what I find at lunch.

nice find, OP

NO luck with my local store in Vernon Hills IL. Most probably very limited store anticipate it.

Just checked the Shrewsbury, MA store and no discount...they even had another palette of 11,500 BTU A/C's on the floor, ready to be put on the shelves. Same SKU, so no go for that store.
