If Lowes takes mfg coupons, this will make the deal a little warmer:

I picked up this pack the other night. I have two upstairs bathrooms with those el cheapo, 4 socket vanity lights that are suppose to use those big, 60W globe bulbs. They put off so much heat in our upstairs we really got to crank the AC to make it comfortable to sleep. I've been putting off replacing those but at this price, I couldn't pass up the chance. It's noticeably more comfortable up there with CFLS(they put out 1/4 the heat of IC, too) and we don't have to have the thermostat down so low. So there's additional 'energy savings' that I never thought of.

Did you actually use 60W globe bulbs before CFL? 240 W ( 4 x 60W) is not that much heat that will heat up the bedroom (assume the lights are off when you sleep).

FYI, I tried to use a mfg coupon for Sylvania bulbs at my local Lowe's (Hilton Head/Bluffton, SC) a few months ago and they told me they do not accept them. She even scanned the bar code to see if it would work.

I got those 8 13 watt bulbs yesterday too at my local Lowe's store. They were on a stand in the lighting section, not with the light bulbs. There was a sign somewhere that said you save 10% on any energy star purchase. I think this means any energy saving light bulbs. Thus that eight pack which is $10 rings up as $9. It's a great deal if you need that many.

Having trouble seeing how bathroom lights make it uncomfortable to sleep. Usually they are only on when you're in the bathroom, and the heat should rise to the attic, not go sideways to the bedrooms.

Anyways, for commercial buildings, the heat from lighting is factored in the HVAC calcs.

This is a decent CFL bulbs. I got 3 packs of these with the $10off coupon I found here. Total about $21. Then I submitted the energy saving rebate with my local electric company (Atlanta, GA - Sawnee EMC). They have $20 rebate if you are their customer and you replace your bulbs to CFL at least 10 bulbs so it only costs me $1

As far as this bulb itself, it takes about 1-2 seconds to lit up. It's soft white meaning it's like the regular bulb, yellow color not like florescent light color.

not bad ... you can get a 6 pack of GE for <10 at WalMart I think so if that's closer you could try there.

Anyone got any experience with Sylvania 'really low profile' CFLs? I saw a 100W that looked really tightly wound on the coils.

Do you have any link to the Sawnee rebate?

Costco sells a 6 or 8 pack of CFL "globe" style bulbs for a reasonable price. I think they were GE brand. When I picked up 2 sets they were on sale for dirt cheap due to either a costco coupon or a PG&E instant rebate. Lately I've noticed similar looking ones at local "99 cent city" stores for $.99 each. They're a great deal at that price. Just my $.02, but I've found that the sealed CFL bulbs (either globe or flood light style) last a lot longer than the non sealed bulbs. I don't know the reasoning behind this... just my experience when using CF bulbs.

I'm not sure the quality of the cfl bulb beside lowes, but in most of the Chiense market or store, I see 2 or 4 for $1.00, 99c store sell 2 bulb & 1 night light for $0.99, also in 99c, they have a 23w cfl buld claim to have 18xx lumens (normal 23w is 1600lumen) sell for 2 for $0.99. I haven't buy any cfl bulb for few years since I bought 5 packs of costco cfl bulb for $2.99, so I can't tell you how is the quality of other cfl bulb.

Make sure that you dispose them properly since they contain a tiny amount of mercury.

You can find the Sylvania 13watt CFL's (60 watt incandescant equivalents) on eBay from many sellers at around $1 per bulb shipping included ,, seems the power companies in California were selling them discounted or some such thing and people are reselling them ... the 60 watt equiv's are really nice as they don't heat up much ,, they can be used in fully enclosed fixtures with no problems... I wouldn't buy any off-brand CFL ,, they don't last.

I wish I could find the auctions you are referring to because best I saw was $2 a bulb and that didn't factor in shipping. Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms.
