Most imporant, you need a gigabit switch. That's the $$$ part.
Gigabit Switches are now priced very reasonably.

Great price on Cat6 cables but you do not need cat6 cables for gigabit switches fyi. Cat5e works just as well for the home gigabit network and usually standard Cat5 also.

You have to be careful using 1' ethernet cables. The minimum recommended length for a patch cord is 3'. Apparently, crosstalk causing packet conflicts can occur in 1' cables.

Do you have any websites that talk about this issue? I've never heard of it, and I would be intrigued if some of the 1' cables I have are causing some problems I experience with my VOIP adapters. I bought a nice 350' Cat5e cable box + connectors + tool combo at Fry's for $33 a couple months ago, so I get my cables much cheaper than these.

I purposely bought 1' patch cords mainly to clean up the wiring, but also thinking that the shorter length would be a slightly better connection.
