As part of the Digital TV transition (including the $40 vouchers that each household can sign up for) the Dish Network "DTVPal" has been a highly anticipated digital television converter box. It has finally arrived and you may be able to purchase it at your local Sears store

$65 - $40 voucher = $25

NOW GO FIND ONE, GOOD LUCK

OP has been drinking. To paraphrase:

The Dish Network DTVPal is highly flawed. The timers and TVGOS do NOT currently work. There is frequently what appears to be garbage along the top edge of the picture. The remote control has interoperability problems when used around Dish Network satellite receivers. Dish Network customer service is horrible.

OP still shows 0 posts. Says something about the value of this one.

Highly flawed is an understatement. It has more documented problems than any other converter box.

Dish Network also played model # and pricing games to confuse the market. They claimed it was model TR-40, at a price of $39.99, so free after coupon. Then they changed the name, then a week before release they upped the price to $59.99, so $19.99 after rebate.

Call Dish Network and they are clueless, some claim they will sell you their service telling you "you don't need that, after next year you won't be able to get any locals unless you sign up for our sat w/ locals service". And I'm a Dish Network subscriber myself, but despise companies when they lie about this stuff.

They're buggy, were over hyped, under delivered. Yes the interface probably is better than most others, but that doesn't help the core problems. If you want one that has been highly reviewed as a great unit with sensitive tuner, go with the Zenith DTT-901. It has the dolby digital audio bug FIXED that plagued earlier releases of the DTT900, plus has analog pass through. No it wont control your VCR like the TR-40, but how many people want to record a 500+ line DTV signal on a 300 line VCR?

People are liking the Zenith model much better or if you want a better picture and have svideo, get the Channelmaster.

Why not just wait until closer to the transition and see what's available then? These things are only going to get more plentiful as time goes on...and this is retail price.

I got Insignia, who is the manufacturer of it for best buy?

Insignia NS-DXA1 = Zenith DTT900
Insignia NS-DXA1-APT = Zenith DTT901

Make sure you have the APT model. If not, go back & exchange it as the non-APT's most likely have an audio problem.

Kids, this is why you shouldn't use drugs.

One huge tip I can give is not to order the $40 coupons until the last minute as they expire in 80 days or so (forget 90 day, 90 is from when they mail them).

They are already at 20.5 million requested for this batch. Initially, they said they would distribute roughly 22.5 million coupons, so it seems like one should request them soon if they wish to participate in the program.
