I have a Navtour that I bought from Buy 8 months ago...works great...good design. The G-sensor is cool, because if you lose gps signal (Tunnel, mountains) you still maintain directional info via an electronic compass. Also, a new Bluetooth GPS for under 200 bucks is a deal to me.

Official information:

dmedia’s upcoming model, the G4, promises to bring GPS navigation devices to the next level. The G4’s unique design boasts a wide 4 inch display screen and a sleek black design with a rounded casing. This effect makes users feel they are viewing navigation and movies on a flat screen TV. The G4 also has an innovative button display which functions as an easy to use touchpad. To improve GPS performance, dmedia has included many special features, such as the e-Compass and G sensor. This allows drivers to receive guidance and stay on course in areas such as tunnels and bridges, where it is difficult to receive a good GPS signal. The added built-in Bluetooth functionality allows users to connect their cell phones to the G4 and use a Bluetooth earpiece to make and receive phone calls while driving. While many other models only had audio support, the G4 also has MPEG4 support, so now you can watch your favorite movies and video clips in full color.

In addition to these exciting device features, the navigation software has never been easier to use. The latest version of PapaGO provides added guidance. Character recognition allows users to easily draw their location. In addition, improve voice navigation allows users to say something as simple as “Home” or “Work” to reach their target destination. If users are searching for a new restaurant, a nearby shopping mall or the closest golf course, the extended POI database will help them find the latest and greatest spots. The G4’s new and improved picture viewer allows users to take their favorite pics of friends and family on the road and view them. Each device comes with an SD card slot, so it is simple to add on memory to store their music collection and favorite movies. If you are looking for one device that truly does it all, be sure to look out for the G4. It’s truly a revolution in GPS navigation.

I didn't find many reviews to read over, but I just ordered one as an impulse buy for what-ever-reason anyway (darn FW); but it appears to have some great features for the price. Seems this model has been around though since 2006 under d-Media brand name outside the US. Hope it works well and here is not too much problem updating the maps.

I did a huge amount of research and bought the Sanyo 4050 instead of this one. It has all the same stuff (minus the G-Sensor) for less $. 4" LCD, Text-To-Speech, Bluetooth, MP3/WMA, Navteq (Garmin) maps. Plus it will play your MP3's while navigating and has a standard 3.5MM headphone jack so you can port the sounds (music, phone, navigation) through your compatible car stereo. It has 2GB interal memory of which you can use 1GB for music storage. There's also an SDHC card slot for 4GB more music. Runs $129 at Frys.com.

I was a little leary of buying it due to some poor reviews at Amazon but as it turns out most of those folks simply didn't read the owners manual. The unit does everything it promises to do with one glaring exception - the bluetooth won't pair with any Windows Mobile based Smartphones (what WERE you thinking Sanyo??) but other than that it is, IMHO, the bang for the buck GPS out there.

Oh, and it even does phonebook contact transfers over Bluetooth and has SMS! Yes, it will allow you to get, read and send text messages from your cell phone, neat!

How do you update the maps on this Sanyo unit? Do you have to buy them through Sanyo, or can you use the Garmin maps and load it onto this GPS? Also, is the interface user-friendly for non-techies, because I'd like to get one for my wife. Thanks!

Sanyo says the updated maps should be available by the end of the year but they are not sure they will be free or not. Currently the unit uses the 2007 Navteq database. Interface is very friendly but, that said, I'm a geek so read into that what you will

Seems like the better gps units used to boast of having the SIRF III(SIRF x, whatever) chips for best reception.
I don't see this in either of the units mentioned in this thread.

Are the SIRF chips not a big deal any more? Do either of these units have them?

SiRFIII chipset is not big deal anymore, unless manufacturer does support SiRFinstantFix technology. Only some TomTom devices and high-end Garmin models can utilize SiRFinstantFix. New chipsets like newest Atlas (Mag Roadmate 14xx) may exceed SiRFIII by spec (number of tracking satellites for ex.), but in real life you will hardly find difference.

The Sanyo uses the SirfIII, locks on quick and hangs on tight (like all SirfIII units).

I got mine yesterday. The design is sleek and unit easy to use. The map is new, so not sure about the update, but I sent an e-mail and awaiting a reply.
