why would you buy that when you can get This?

alert mods

Because that wasn't tested for the new 3G.

Actually, there is no software unlock released for the 3G iPhone, only jailbreak is possible currently.

Well that's fine if you want to potentially brick your phone. This is completely reversible in case you need to take your phone in for servicing or whatever. It's also at the simcard level, so firmware updates issued for the phone from Apple aren't going to disable the unlocked status.

since you must activate the iphone in store, what's the meaning unlocking it?

unfortunately people steal iphones. or people misplace them and the phone finds a new owner.

Or people buy them used!

so any issues with this? sounds like good to keep as a "just in case". for example I travel and want to be able to unlock with a SIM from another country

Well actually that first week that the phones were available, when Apple was having problems with their activation servers, people were allowed to walk out of the store with unactivated phones to be activated at home.

Unlocking means that you can now take your Unlocked phone and use it on another wireless carrier who uses a sim card. For example you can take the unlocked 3G iphone and use it on T-Mobile. Currently you can't use the 3G iphone on T-Mobile without first unlocking it. There are hacks for jailbreaking and activating the 3G iphone right now, but no unlock yet. The 1st Gen Iphone has jailbreak, activation, and unlock.

why are you getting greened? Do you know the definition of a phone unlock? Its so people on GSM carriers other than AT&T can use the phone.

Just to clarify; this thing DOES NOT unlock the phone. It sits between your SIM and the reader in the phone and tricks it into thinking it is a valid sim card. Remove it, and the phone is still locked.

alright let me clarify terms...

Unlock - allows sims of other carriers to be used
Activation - allows you to use your phone - does not matter if a sim is inserted or not
Jailbreak - allows access to the iphone's private filesystem

With this simcard hack, you are doing only one of the three - fake unlocking - allowing you to use a sim from Tmobile. You will still need to activate it by means of a real ATT sim or through jailbreaking.

So even if your phone was software unlocked, you still need it activated to use the phone.

Right ... there's nothing shady about unlocking a phone. I unlocked my original iPhone so I could use it overseas. Without an unlock, it's impossible unless you want to pay exorbitant international roaming charges via ATT.

I have bought one of these simcard unlocks to try out with my 3g iPhone on T-Mobile. I will report back with my findings.

iPhone 3G can be activated using pwnage tool.

As for unlock via this card method I would be very suspicious. Solutions like this have been reported to be unreliable and carrier dependent via the community. Do your homework.
