DutchDutch said:Here's a question: are you going to reward members if they "steal" a deal from another member at another site?

I have absolutely no issue when someone posts something that originated elsewhere, although I personally believe credit should be given in those cases, but I'm curious how you'll respond. You may see an influx of people copying and pasting without searching first (lots of reposts).
With that logic, isn't it just as bad giving credit to someone else who doesn't deserve it too? Who is to say the post "stolen" from the "other" site and posted here was the true originator of the deal anyway ... and the actual first post of the deal on the internet? Sure, there are some more major and used deal sites that many of us are familiar with and many of us frequent daily, but there are literally thousands of sites where a deal can actually originate, even on small sites which many of us never visit first hand ... yet when it's a good deal, no matter how small or big the site is, it is a sure thing it will be copied over to other sites as well as here at FW.

So just suppose that poster from the other deal site just copied and pasted the deal from a 3rd deal site, where that 3rd site poster copied and pasted it from a 4th site ... etc., etc., etc.!!! Shouldn't a FW member then research the deal for the "real" originator and give the "right" poster credit? Isn't giving credit to the wrong site/poster who had just copied/pasted the deal from another site just as bad as not saying anything at all, even if that is where the poster here from FW had first noticed it? I would rather not give specific credit without knowing exactly who had originated the deal, though I guess it doesn't hurt to put a generic disclaimer,"Deal snatched from another site and brought to the good folks here on FatWallet!"

Sure, giving credit to a poster from where one might have first noticed a deal may seem to be an ethical approach and help a copy-cat poster feel less like a posting "tool" looking for accolades that they may not fully and truly deserve, but it isn't in any way, shape, or form, going to be as accurate a designation as you may believe in pointing out the true originator of a deal and the one who actually deserves the full credit anyway.

Either way, I'm just glad the deals get spread around to many sites, because I may easily miss a great deal on one of the many other deal sites I visit, yet catch the same deal posted here at FatWallet ... and vice versa as well!

The leaderboard is excellent, and has just made this site stand out from the competition. Especially good was the idea of honoring rookies, who will become that much more dedicated. The trophies caught my attention the moment I saw one, and I clicked excitedly to see the new feature. The encouragement it provides will definitely generate more and faster deal posts, no matter the source.

SUGGESTIONS:
- Many people will be curious about the Monthly MVP's posts. I am. Please link to them.
- PM someone when they make it to the leaderboard, including weekly honors (unless this is done already).
- During the time someone is a Monthly MVP, give them a more impressive trophy icon. That little bit of differentiation can mean a lot to someone.
- Give FatWallet schwag to the MVP and top posters. Small tokens of appreciation like t-shirts and coffee mugs last far longer than the leaderboard, and will cement the posters' loyalty.

Is there a link to the leaderboard anywhere besides in this post?

Vvvery nice, now can we get something like "the wall of shame" as well?

I know a couple of members that seem to be working very hard to get there...

Good suggestions, and things we're working on!
Thanks.

cheapnchong said:I wouldn't think that basing it on number of views or number of deal posting has any bearing on how useful the deal was. I think it should be based on how USEFUL the post to others. Although, it's not perfect the rating of the post is one way to determine. Aquick way to determine may be let's say add up all the greens a FWer got in a period of time (let's say a month) and subtract all the reds in the same time, sort it by descending order, and there you have the top 5 or 10 whatever... my 2 sense. We spent a lot of time researching and testing to come up with the best formula to indicate the "hotness" of a deal, and ratings were certainly considered as a part of that.

It sounds like maybe part of what you're suggesting is a way to recognize members' overall contributions? For example, maybe they weren't the OP, but they had a lot of great positively rated replies. Which we absolutely want to do! We're just not there. Yet.

The Hot Deals Leaderboard is intended to directly recognize, reward, and encourage posting hot deals. Which is certainly a much more limited scope than recognizing our most valuable members site wide. There are *many* more ways to positively contribute as an outstanding member than just posting Hot Deals, and we'd like to find the best ways to reward them all... and this seemed like a good starting place.

How about right next the 'switch to modern view' text box near the top of the page?

Whoever started the SERO thread and the eBay CashBack thread should get a permanent place in the hall of fame based upon sheer volume of hits on those threads.

MisterCheap ran away with the MVP award. The rest of us just live in his world.

alert mods

How about linking the deals that the MVP member posted?
That way everybody knows why the chosen member is being given credits for.
And we could also vouch for the choice.

No 'Onion' in the list?

Mechwarrior1989 said:I foresee a flood of deals that aren't very good but are still posted in hopes of getting a trophy next to their name.

And kind of offtopic, but how do some deals get a "HOT" designation in their title, even when they have low views and low/no replies?

Foresee? That is the reality today. A bunch of crap you have to wade through to get to the good stuff.

MISTERCHEAP is the man.

I think it's good that the Rep system isn't based on solely on 'hits'. I have long noticed that the more cryptic the title is, the more 'hits' it gets, and we certainly shouldn't reward that.

Compare

$30 off Xbox360 games!

to

$19 for Fusion Frenzy 2 or Cars for the Xbox360! Amazon, YMMV

Hope that helps

"Cheapnchong" has to be my favorite FW user name. They should create some lists like that.
