Now you teeterwalleters can pull the trigger as the price came down even further...

Newegg.com has the Seagate ST3500630AS 500GB 7200RPM 16MB Buffer SATA Hard Drive for $69.99 with free shipping. Yeah this is the 7200.10 edition that uses the hallowed Perpendicular Recording technology (first generation).

Seems like around $75 for 500 and $100 for 750 is becoming pretty standard. 2TB is out or almost out.

$79 was the standard. Mine is the best deal I've seen without all the YMMV garbage.

no single drives at 2tb out yet. Seagate (i think, or WD) just announced they'll have a 1.5tb disk out. 500gb for around $75 is a good price (especially for seagate 5yr warranty) - not the cheapest ever, but the best i've seen in awhile with no rebate to deal with.

$69.99 for 500GB external at Microcenter -- saves you a few dollars and gives you an external enclosure too. Of course, Microcenter is not selling the Seagate at that price (at least, I think it's not a Seagate drive in there).

External is nice but MUCH slower than an internal drive. It depends on what you want to use it for. + I'll take a Seagate warranty any day and will pay a few extra dollars for it. You know you will need it. Hard drives are the first thing to go on your PC.

$69.99 is a good deal, but for me tax and gas to drive to the store makes it not quite as good as OP.

Is this the drive which sometimes requires a firmware upgrade? If so, any advice as to if I should get this or pass as I plan on installing using a sata to ide adapter? Thought I read somewhere that an actual sata bus is required for the flashing. Thanks in advance.

The firmware in question is AAK on the 7200.10 (not 11). Many people report it being slow. I run 16 of these in my file server (most AAK) and it goes nice and fast .

Oh please. Not any louder than your wife. I have this one and it's just the same as my WD and Maxtor. Either buy or stop whining.

Hard drives are the first thing to go on your PC.yes, and they take all the data with them. 3 yrs // 5 yrs warranty does not make any difference. warranty does not include data recovery.

ok, got it and installed it...now...how the heck do you format it as a BASIC disk? when I go to Disk Management, the Convert to Dynamic wizard comes up. When I right click on the UnAllocated disk partition, it doesn't allow me to format it. And the drive is almost too hot to handle!
A little help please?
Thanks.
...
Never mind...figured it out...
Thanks.
