Shame they never offer free s&h on the pannys, the 42" samsung is 799 free ship.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how these two ($800 42" Samsung / $800 42" Panasonic) compare to each other in real life? Do they both handle motion equally well?
The Samsung has a grey panel, but 20,000:1 contrast. The Panasonic has a blacker panal, but only 15,000:1 contrast.

RIP
I have both the 75u and the 80u. The 80u has a much better "anti-glare" ... and the colors seems a bit richer as well. I can't compare to the samsung....but I heard compared to last year, Samy is shipping a LOT of flat panel tv's in anticipation of the Feb 17th deadline...not that you NEED it if you have cable (re: digital tv) but walk into a bestbuy...and they push you to spend 100's on a flat panel instead of saying "oh, you have comcast, dish, dtv, etc, you don't need this...be on your way"....
Anyways the 80u is NIICE. and it's down over $300 since late Feb. good price...but if you can wait til Xmas...should be some pretty nice deals!!
-2 cents.

This TV rocks... I had the 42inch, and upgraded to the 50. Best 800 bux tv you will find. This is the second time it has hit this price. Don't wait, it will go back up. If you have a frys near you, you can pick this up in store when you buy online. The option to do so is right before you purchase it, three pages in, after you enter credit card info. Don't ask me why... Dont forget to check AVS forums on how to break these TV's in properly. If you do, image retention won't be a problem. This unit kicks LCD's butts for the price.
very tempted. bought one of these for my parents a few months back. panny's are sweet. i'd pay for the shipping over the sammy, although that's a solid set too.
May grab one seening the 4yr old Panny crt tv in the one room just died this morning . Thx OP !

For those without a Fry's... Costco is running a special on their version of this same model for $799 as well.

If you pick it up from Costco you don't need to pay the shipping costs Frys charges if you need it delivered.

The fry's model is TH-42PX80U on Panasonic.com. The Costco one is TH-C42HD18 on Panasonic.com. You can compare the two models on the site, for side by side comparison.
Comparison on the Panasonic site will show you that they are VERY similar. Both are the same generation display (G11) and the same resolution (the Fry's site is incorrect on the resolution, these are 1024 x 768 panels). Slightly different dimensions and weights. Two changes here -- contrast ratio is higher on the Fry's version which also has a third (front mounted) HDMI port. Clearly the Fry's version is slightly better. But, if you don't have a Fry's nearby, the Costco one is a nearly identical alternative. Costco one has one upside, full 2 year warranty (Fry's has a one-year/two year on glass panel only).
Stunning picture on either of these two Panasonics. You won't believe they are only 720P/1080i (don't tell anyone, they won't be able to tell either).
