Wapp said: what about buying a handful of these and putting them in a raid? Even if they have a chance of failure, at least it won't be catastrophic.
I have done exactly this. I have 4x in Raid 0 for the fast part of the stripe and raid 10 for the slower part. Works great and raid10 acts as a repository for data that I don't want to lose in a hard drive crash (yes, I have backups..and no, I know that RAID is not a backup)
I'm going to order two more and put them up as RAID 0 in the same box because copying bogs down sometimes because all the spindles are tied together.

can we use the 25 off 75 coupon on them? then it is going to be hot along with 12% customer appreciation coupon. do they allow coupon stacking?

* Go to store * Go to kiosk * Place order with in-store payment * Pay at the cashier with GC

The 12% is in store only - Assuming you have a valid 25off75, you could place the order on the kiosk. However YMMV on stacking (depends on the cashier)

Thanks - and I would end up with it mailing form Staples.com (assuming in stock) - or picking up from store shelf (assuming in stock)?

Now I know you, so when your drive dies, you just let me know.

I will second that. I have only had 6 drives crash and die in the last 15 years and 5 of them were western digitals. The other one was a 40mb ibm that died in a power surge.

thanx OP, in for 1 300gb.
I also purchased a $25 off $75 code from e-junkie.com for $1.19. Was worth it to me, it saved me $25. One time use code (for online purchase) came in an email as soon as I had paid.
Anyone know what the first 5 digits of the $25 off $75 code are from e-junkie? I just used a coupon last week and wanted to make sure the first 5 digits are different so I don't waste $1.19!

The kiosk order is a .com order, except you pay for it at the register if you wish. I'm not sure if there's a minimum s/h as it is online...

LOL. Folks new to the computers crack me up. In my collection of dead hard drives, I have many WD, Maxtor, Seagate, Quantum, Conner Peripherals, Micropolis, and a few more I don't even remember the brands... The bottom line is that these hard mechanical devices spinning at high speed through fluctuating heat and and cold cycles. THEY WILL ALL DIE, some sooner than others and it's purely statstics that you're the unlucky one. Maybe yours fell off the truck and was sold for a "hot" deal or you were mean to the UPS man and he regularly drops your packages on purpose. To blame Maxtor is about as smart as blaming the president for the economy but then again, that's just what people like you tend to do.

Well.. I disagree.. again .. may be its just me.. but blaming Maxtor is NOT remotely similar to blaming the President for the BAD economy.
Just a heads up. I was able to successfully order 2 of the 160GB SATA drives this morning. I didn't check any of the other models.

Well when you assume you make an ass out of u and me.
I am not new to computers in anyway, I have worked with computers for more than 16 years, almost your age. I worked as a computer technician, which means I fixed computers and I have seen my share of hard drives and computer parts. I also build my own pcs and work as a computer programmer. I may have had a WD die here and there, but maxtor was the one that died all the time. Seagate drives are great. Yes any drive can die, but get a maxtor and you are almost guaranteed it will die out in 2-3 years if it makes it that long. I have a seagate in my pc right now and have another ordered. I have western digital drives from years ago from my multiple pcs that still run without any issue. My maxtor collection of drives is in the trash. But for blaming the President for the economy, yes I sure do, but this isn't a political forum. If maxtor works for you, great, my opinion of them stands. You can agree or disagree.
FYI, seagate accquired maxtor in 2006. I haven't bought any maxtor drives for years, it is possible since the acquisition by seagate, the new maxtor drives are better, but they would be seagate's low end drives.

Remember the bigfoot drives? THOSE were unreliable.
Though I have to disagree with you on Maxtors...they're just like any other drive..some die, some don't. My nemesis has always been Western Digital, though I've had my share of Seagates go bad as well.
Re: Item #: 663890, the Maxtor 160GB Int Sata HD kit
Unfortunately, the inventory on the "special buy" item you ordered has been depleted due to high demand. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. You were not billed for this item."
WTF I ordered when they were showing inventory. Must not have a very good inventory system. On well, even though it was a good deal, it wasn't a great deal. I picked up a PATA 160 Maxtor 4 or so years ago for $35 after a rebate and coupon. At the time that was a great deal.
I also got this same email today. I passed up going to my local store & getting one since I was getting free shipping. CS at Staples always told me inventory was real time.
