Just got off the phone with Canon Tech support. I called about an issue on my 3 year old Powershot S2-IS and was told about the Canon Loyalty program.

This program allows you to replace your current Canon camera with a Canon refurbished product. The refurbished unit carries a 6 month warranty. The following models are currently offered:

SD850 IS $150
G9 $250
EOS XT (with lens kit, same as this ) $275

Taxes extra, shipping is $10 for 2-day delivery. You must return your old / defective camera (must be a Canon). Prepaid shipping label will be provided.

Call Tech Support at 866-443-8002 or 800-828-4040 to get started.
You will need the serial number of your current camera.

Edit: Yes, I bought the XT for about $300 after taxes.

Customer Loyalty Program's direct number is 866-443-8002 , option 2 for digital camera upgrades.

Also see excerpt of Canon Order Confirmation at the bottom of this summary.

In-stock orders cannot be modified or canceled! That said, here are the four easy steps:

1) Specify that you have a broken Canon XYZ camera and would like to know what the loyalty upgrade options are. They will try to transfer you to a technician, but you can tell them you just want to know the prices first and the rep can give them to you. (Update 9/13/12 - Rep said no need to transfer to tech, can just take your info and serial and process)

2) Once you are ready, call again. This time, you will get transfered to a technician, who will ask you to desribe the issues. They would verify that 1) it's broken* and 2) it's out of warranty (just say you've had it for a over a year). Then, he would ask for the broken camera's serial number, your name, phone, address and email.

(*TIP: if you specify water damage, e.g., it won't turn on after it got wet, they will accept it as broken for sure)

3) The technician will give you the prices as well, then transfer you back to the loyalty program rep, who will take your name, phone, address again as well as your credit card. You will get the order number.

See "Canon Loyalty Trade-In Prices" for recent quotes on trade-in prices

4) Canon will ship you the replacement camera with FedEx signature required, along with a prepaid FedEx label and a box for you to ship your broken camera to them. You must ship it to them within 10 business days to avoid unreturned product fee. You only need to ship the camera body, so you can keep all accesories (batteries, charger, straps, etc.).

I got an A60 from like 6 years ago which is probably worth about 10 dollars now... you're telling me I could break it, send it in, and take my pick of one of those cameras?

So, were you able to get in on this deal?

rated:
IMO this is a decent deal only if you have a broken Canon.

The XT has been replaced twice (XTi and XSi), and can be found NEW for under $400 anyways.

rated:
I just broke the status panel of my G5. This seems to be perfect timing... Think I should trade it in?

For my PowerShot A40 I was offered:

An A550 (might have been 590) for $89.
An S1000 for $100.
An SX100 for $125.

I really wanted that G9 for $250.

rated:
Been meaning to upgrade my A40. Great camera that still takes nice pix. G9 would have been nice for $250.

This is a nice deal. The XT is a good entry-level DSLR, and, hey, if you outgrow it, upgrade it the next time Canon does this for the 40D

rated:
Those arent always your options, it depends on what you're sending in:

Heres what I got with a A60--

a560 - $89
sd1000 - $100
sx100 - $125

None of those are even worth getting.. oh well

Guy seemed to stress the broken part when I told him my A60 worked fine. I guess pull your hammers and microwaves out and start destroying your cameras.

rated:
you can still get the cheaper one and put CHDK hack on it. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Yes, depends on what camera you have, they have a different list of offerings.

My broken G5 was offered:
SD850IS for $150
G9 for $250
Digital Rebel XT for $275

+$10 for 2 days shipping
+tax

You can call, find out what they offer, and call back later after you have decided.

Edit: Friend told me he'll sell me his old 20D (he claims ~2,000 clicks... I think way more!) for ~$350 body only. Decisions decisions...

nice deal! My A610 is old and to be placed. hope canon offers a decent one.

did anyone try with way-old ones like S20? yes i still have that big brick.

does it do any good to eBay one of these cameras and then calling them?

The SX100 is a great camera, has IS, 10X zoom, and a nice lens.

Wonder what they'd offer me for my old 1Ds...

rated:
Thanks OP. For my daughter's busted SD800-IS I was offered a refurb G9 for $250. Other things they offered was SD850 IS $150 and the XT for $275. No interest in the latter, I am still thinking about the former. I asked if there is an expiration date on the offer and was told that there is not

rated:
If the 1ds is not broken, I'd offer you a brand new A580 for free in exchange, LOL

Considering the only decent deals so far are for fairly decent cameras, and even then aren't massive, probably just not worth it. I am half way tempted to scam a serial number and see what offering a digital rebel would get though.

Though actually a known problem with some of the canon digital cameras http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategoryid=226&modelid=11154 is that the serial number wears off, so you could see what you could get without having the camera yet, but I am just too lazy.

Ed: actually since the info is in the exif you can go to flickr search by camera select a camera of the sort you were thinking, and click more properties on one of the images (may take a few tries find one that displays exif). Then you would at leaat know if it was worth it... but far far too much work for little old me

rated:
Does anyone know if this only works with their digital line of cameras? I was hoping to use this to upgrade from and SLR to a DSLR.

some of those old film cameras can be more valuable than digital cameras.

those who want to trade in old film cameras, please let me know. although canon does not want them. i may be able to offer to buy from you for the trade in price. you know what a good guy i am, always willing to help anyone in need.

offered me the same thing as OP's for my 7 year old camera (S300)

Good way to get a cheap SLR- buy a SD800-IS for $5 or so and then get an XT for $275, so you get a refurbished XT for $295ish OTD instead of $400ish

Makes me wonder what mine are worth. I have 2 A-1s, a Canon 50mm F1.4 lens, a Canon 28mm F2.8 lens along with an aftermarket 200mm zoom lens.

Can't you use those lenses on the DSLRs? (i.e. Rebel XT)

You can use them with an adapter but an F1.4 would effectively be F2.8, etc.

rated:
Called in to check what they would offer for my broken SD1000 ( famous lens error ), they offered the same deal.

My questions is $275+ tax + $10 (shipping) good for a refurb XT with 6 months warranty??

I already own a Sony A100 DSLR, trying to justify if the canon XT offer is good for me to buy

rated:
Are all the models that they offer refurbs? I have a A80 in good condition. Wondering whether it will be worth doing the trade.

rated:
Could you use an ancient reflex camera?

Actually I have an F1 with all the top of the line (for back then) pro kit (fast lenses including wide angle, motor drives, battery kits, etc).

Edit > Oops! I saw in the summary the models that qualify for trade-in.

Keep updating the trade-in models. Maybe one of my old film Canons will qualify.
I'll post what I find if I call them.

Thanks

I called in and they are offering same deal as OP ('saferisk'). I am getting "Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR" for my "Canon PowerShot SD110 3MP Digital Elph with 2x Optical Zoom" 4 year old camera. Thanks 'saferisk'.

$307 for the Rebel, $23 for a broken S300 on eBay minus whatever I can get on eBay for my previous-model Rebel (300D). Not too bad. Thanks, OP!
