I couldn't order online...the coupon codes wouldn't apply to my total. So, I had to call in and order it. Hopefully, it was still in stock and I'll actually get it.
Now, for the big decision...I'm debating between this and a Rebel XT. I wonder if I should keep this one, or go for the Rebel XT (both almost the same price).

I just checked my order status online, and it says "researching". I wonder if that means I was too late?

I just checked my order too and it says the same thing. It's written right underneath a headline that states 'We're sorry, but problems with your order may prevent us from delivering it on time.'
Awesome deal if it goes through. If not, I guess I'll just have to wait for the next awesome deal with a Canon XTi or Nikon D40x.

They're DSLRs. Get the lenses that have Image Stabilization built in. In the case of Nikon, you would get the "VR" lenses (Vibration Reduction)
Sweet, thanks a bunch! I wasn't sure if it was something that was supposed to be built into the body or the lens.
IMO having image stabilization built into the camera body is way better than an individual lens. If it's built into the body even older lenses have IS when you attach them to the DSLR. If it's on a per lens basis, you have to purchase a really expensive lens with IS every time.

I guess that's true enough. Is IS generic enough that any lens can experience the same benefit from the exact same IS system or is it better to have the IS system custom-tailored to different lenses? I'm a camera newbie and apologize if this question turns out to be an extremely stupid one.

Nope.. you invest in Glass not in a Camera Body. Any serious camera aficionado will tell you that.
All my Lens are a full 2.8's and they are NOT cheap... but people just keep changing out the camera bodies when new features come out on the bodies... can you imagine investing in camera bodies (that have IS) and then new tech comes out to has a better ISO, full frame CMOS, etc etc... Id be been more broke!
All IS are not the same. Even $150 (street value) S2 IS has image stablization. Doesn't mean that it has the same IS as Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8L IS where the cost of IS is > $500-$600.
IS requires extra lenses that correct the rays to compensate for the shake. Body does not have lenses in it. Just prism, mirror and sensors. You don't get same IS from the body as lenses (period.)

Eff. Apparently I tried to buy it within 10 minutes of it being OOS. I'm SO TIRED of missing out on these dSLR deals. I swear, you have to tape your face to the monitor so you don't miss 'em. And I want one so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so bad ...

I know what you mean, but do not despair. Prices will only go down.
I am a pretty good photographer and I cannot exceed the capability of my XT (low end Canon) body when I put an L (high end) lens on it. As so many have said, put money into lenses.
That said, the D40 takes great pics...sorry you missed it.

I have one and its one of my favorite toys. you'll love using it
I was charged tax on the after coupon price during the order but my order email comfirmation and online account has tax on the before coupon price? (this is in CA)
So I'm headed to OfficeMax anyway. In today's paper, I received a "brown paper bag" from OM that says "15% off everything you can fit in the bag". Excludes GC and phone cards. Will they give me the D40 for the sale price of $449.99 or will it be $499.99 less 15%? Or maybe nada? gonna find out . I need ink anyway. Just a thought. Question on the IS or NV lens. Does Niken make a true IS lens for this camera? Tia.
The kit lens for the D40 does not have IS or VR. The kit lens for the D60 does have VR. VR is really most useful on telephoto lenses, though. Nikon has a good selection of VR lenses for the D40.

Got it, thanks. I'l do some homework, check for change in the couch, and invest in "some glass". Thanks for the heads up all.
I called up and orderd one via their 1-800 line on the 8th. Other than in the store, that's as probably as late as anyone got one. Scheduled for delivery tomorrow so I will find out if it is a used floor-model. If it is a used one, I will not be happy with them to say the least.
