CircuitCity has this for $99 after $50IR.
LINK

i've been keeping my eyes on NAS devices as i want to build one for my network and stumble upon this. it goes for 120-150 everywhere else.

review
all the reviews say it's slow (compare to higher end NAS) but it does get the job done.

linksys NSLU2 runs a little better because it has hacked firmwares.

any coupons to make this hot?

edit: link doesn't work, just go to cc's site and search for nas200

Cheap -yes

but One of the worst - there are dozens of the on eBay. proprietary software means it's not real NAS, they claim it's SAN (it isn't that either)

It is NOT exacly one of the worst. You just have to know exactly what are you buying. This "toaster" has an ENTERPRISE-level file system that never needs defragmenting which alone makes it worthwhile. The area where the toaster sucks is (a) it needs a proprietary software installed on each computer that accesses it and (b) it's for M$ windowz only (and at least 90% of the world computers still run windowz)

As for the NAS in OP, if it's slower than NSLU2 - it's totally useless. I had NSLU2 with OpenSLUG and gave it up as soon as I started streaming video as it couldn't provide enough throughput.

I have the Nas 200 and it is extremely slow- even with the new firmware release. Trouble is it has a slow processor and does not have gigabit. Takes like 8hours to copy a 50gb folder.

The RDC processors are used in a lot of cheap NAS devices and things like print servers. The processor core is essentially a souped up 80186. Granted, it runs at 133 MHz, but it's crippled with a single data rate 16-bit SDRAM subsystem and doesn't have large caches, so the performance running at 133 or 150 MHz is way off of something like a Pentium running at the same frequency.

Exactly. It's information like this that keeps me coming back to FW. Green for inphoenix.

Be careful - I jumped on the SC101 after reading this thread and some initial research, only to find out that it is NOT a practical for NAS. In particular, it is not possible to backup your system and then restore if it crashes. As mentioned in an earlier post, it is a SAN solution - simply for STORAGE. It is possible to format NTFS, instead of the proprietary format, but the format will not be recognized by windows if the drive is moved to say a USB enclosure for recovery.

Sleppybubba: if you are aware of a method to operate the SC101 as a true NAS, I am ALL EARS.
