can somebody clarify, does this DVD player also play HD DVDs? the Vanns copy makes it seem so:

Vanns said:February 19, 2008 may have spelled the end for HD DVD — on that day, Toshiba announced that it would no longer develop, manufacturer, or market this hi-def video format — but it's not the end for HD DVD players. In fact, it's a new day for your DVD library. While you can enjoy any HD DVD titles released before this announcement, you can also see your standard DVDs like never before with an HD DVD player. How, you might ask? One word: upconversion. Your DVD collection delivers lower-resolution (480i) video content while your huge flat-panel HDTV is capable of displaying a high-definition 1080i or 1080p resolution. Video upconversion enhances lower-resolution video content, by means of a technique known as interpolation, so that it displays at high-definition on your HDTV. So, investing in a DV-48AV HD DVD player means investing in better performance from the media you already have.

I think I read it can be made region free. It does have a front USB port as another poster mentioned. Check AVS Forum for information. There are a lot of threads about this player and comparisons. I am bummed I just bought an Oppo 980H last week. This is a much better deal.

Could you elaborate a bit on your thoughts? I also just bought an Oppo 980H (but have not yet received it) and was considering the DV-48AV as well. My primary interest is in SACD - although DVD playback is important as well.

Based on a user review at AVS forum, it appears that the Oppo will send full 5.1 thru the HDMI interface, while the DV-48AV only does 2-ch stereo thru HDMI. If that's correct, then I expect that I'll be happier with the Oppo. However I haven't done a complete comparison of the two units, so I'd be interested in other perspectives...

Pio DV-48AV will send 5.1 DSD over HDMI if you have capable HDMI receiver that supports DSD. It will send 5.1 w/o problem. Note that for HDMI transmission of multi channel DSD, you need set video to 720p or higher so that there is enough bandwidth for multi-channel audio. This applies to all players.

Still $100 (it's closer to $100, why put $99?). If I was getting a Denon receiver, would it be worth getting a Denon player for some special connection that could only be made between Denon units (besides remote control), or would the Pioneer still be a better choice? Also seems I read Denon players are made by Funai or someone similar.

I just bought one of these after long consideration....
to reply to your question slickone, if the extra interface really matters to you, feel free to stick to one brand. personally, i use a harmony remote, so special interfaces really aren't important here.
that said - this player retails over $250, so unless you're finding some amazing deal on a denon (and i didn't see anything that great recently), i don't think you're going to find a better player for sd! (especially since it also does sacd & dvd-a!)

Is this player region-free? Or can it be made that way? Is the USB interface 1.1 or 2.0? Thanka.

The player in op upconverts to 1080p just as well. The Elite player in op appears to be just as capable, in every aspect, and even moreso, than the regular Pioneer.

"..Designed for upscaling DVD’s standard 480p resolution to an astonishing 1080p resolution, the Pioneer Elite DV-48AV provides you with an entire universe of connections to assure a miraculous visual experience no matter what you watch. But that’s not all you’ll discover. This amazing machine can also play a range of high-resolution audio DVD discs, decode SACD and provide extraordinary audio capability. All of which make the Pioneer Elite DV-48AV the ultimate DVD player for both film fanatics and audiophiles."

I'd like to have DVD-A (and SACD) player, and was thinking, instead of spending $100 at this point, why not wait a bit longer and get a Blu-ray player, and was looking at this one, but it doesn't mention either of those formats. Are mfg's giving up on supporting them?

More on it here.

I'm hardly an expert, but from what I've seen on various audiophile forums, there seems to be a strong sentiment that the equipment manufacturers and music publishers (with the possible exception of some in Europe?) have abandoned the audio enthusiast/high-quality recorded audio market... Consumer confusion due to the proliferation of audio formats on CD and DVD has gotten some of the blame. But then, maybe the reports of their impending death are premature... When I look for titles in SACD, the 'selection' that I find is underwhelming, unfortunately... I bought this unit specifically for listening to SACD (I haven't set it up yet, but that's a story for another time), and bought several highly-recommended discs from Amazon (a lot of the gloom and doom can be seen in Amazon's forums and user reviews)...

I think (could be wrong) that only Panasonic's first blu-ray player does DVD-Audio.
Likewise, only the first Sony PS3 plays SACD.
There is nothing (yet) that plays all 3.
