If they will accept your application, DO IT!!
I would take the scissors to any unused credit cards thought - I had one in my desk drawer, my house was broken into, it was stolen and the theives ran up about $5,000 on it. SWEET

I had tried to open a citbank mastercard, while I had another AT&T mastercard issued by them. 3-4 days after my new application, they called up and informed me that I had another card with them, and if I would like to consolidate both the cards (with the balance carried to the new card and the credit limit too) into the new card .. I did and they cancelled the old card and carried forward everything on the old card to the new one. Call discover to find out .. they might have something similar.
Staples has a Maxtor 500GB external drive for $75 AC, so I'd say this offer is lukewarm at best.

Is this drive itself SATA or PATA? I need a new internal drive so I just might bite on this but I was really looking for a PATA drive to replace my dead one.
It is free. The wife cannot say a word. thanks OP!

One thing to keep in mind is it might help some fico scores to have older credit cards, at least that's what I read somewhere.

I still have not closed my first credit card that I had in 2001 .. even though I have never used it after 2004 .. its just sitting at home idle. Not to boast, but my score is at 792 (transunion) .. never a late payment, always paid in full everytime for all my cards.

sweet! have actually been looking for a good deal on an external HD *without* a separate power cable, but, hey, for a free hard drive i can live with a slightly annoying power cable. thanks FW!
I wasn't able to apply for the second card, beacuse I already received Discovery card just two months ago:
"Thank you for your interest in Discover Card. However, our records indicate that you have already submitted an application within the last 90 days. For that reason, this application will not be processed. Thank you again.?"

Here is a link to the product at Western Digital - though we've been unable to find a mention of whether it is SATA or PATA. The model number is WDH1U5000N.
Is there an annual fee for this discover card? Or any other type of fee? Also, what's the earliest you can cancel the card and still get the drive?
Edit: nvm just saw "No Annual Fee" but is there any catch to this offer? If I don't plan to ever actually charge anything to the card (other than to activate it)...

There is no annual fee. Edit: I see you found that out. I just got accepted so I will make one purchase, wait for the EHD and then do away with the card.

Edit: nvm just saw "No Annual Fee" but is there any catch to this offer? If I don't plan to ever actually charge anything to the card (other than to activate it)... as per their T&C, you WILL have to make a charge for them to consider the card to be "activated". From their website:
Card activation is defined as making a purchase, balance transfer or cash advance with this credit card.
I'm sure this is the basic EHD, nothing fancy. This will be just the ticket to archive my recorded Dish Network programs downloaded from the DVR/Receiver.
Not to impressed with their customer service. I called to check on my status as normally I get approve within minutes. At first the lady said if the email stated 30 days, then thats how long it would take. I told her if it was going to take that long I was not interested in their card and cancell my application. She then decided to get more of my information and check my status and lo and behold I had been approved and I would be receiving information in the mail. Not a good start for them with me IMO.

Thanks OP.
I'm tempted, but leery of opening a line of credit simply to get a $90 HD.

Hard drive prices are dropping probably due to the newer SSHD that are the next generation HD. Thus all of the mechanical ones will eventually disappear. I think the Canon A590 digital camera is a better deal.
Any comments on where we should make the purchase to have the "charge".
I did this a few weeks ago and I have the card, but apparently I need to use it in order to get my GPS.
Who takes Discover?
Also I got Discover Miles for the GPS, and I am going to also get Discover More for the next freebee.

nice! Discover has the best customer service I've yet to encounter. They answer the phone right away, and you speak with someone in the USA--imagine that!
cgz206 said: Do we have to wait the card arrive in order to use it? I mean can we get the number, exp date and use it? how lone it takes to arrive? Discover (or a service company) called me today and stated that I was approved. Further the card would be mailed out and 'should' arrive by Wednesday next. (YMMV) I then would need to call their 800 number and 'activate' the card. .

I was told that was not a problem. Has anyone actually received one of these hard drives after applying for Discover?

applied Jun 19 received/charged Jun 26 received shipped email Jul 30
This is my case:
Aug 1st applied for the card Aug 8th card came - purchase (gas) Aug 11th got "good news" email Waiting for shipping notice ..... *edit* Your Western Digital 500 GB My Book Essential 2.0 - USB 2.0 External Hard Drive was shipped on 08/15/2008 Arrived today 8/16/08 Brand new shipped from Amazon ... woot!
used my card for the first time Saturday and received my email today that my HD would be coming from Amazon. If this does come this fast, this was a very easy and great deal.

Both gf and I had unused Discover cards... they were nice enough to close them out and I got the drive a few days ago ...gf is a couple days behind but she got her congrats letter, will ship etc. But call them and get instant approval on the online application, we both got the 30 days yadda yadda notice- called and was approved instantly.
Finally got mine Friday. Was planning on returning, but HD prices are dropping fast as stock market, last I looked $89 at Amazon. I returned to WalMart with lost receipt for $99 plus tax.
Reason I am posting was that I got a real surprise when CSR wanted date and type of purchase to look up actual purchase. I said three weeks ago, either Sat or Sun but couldn't remember if I used CC or cash. Luckily she found a cash purchase that date and returned $109.
