Mac mini's always sell out quickly. I swear it's one of Apple's best computers (I'm on one right now).

For the Windows users out there that are sick of WinXP or Windows Vista running slow with potential spyware/viruses, the Mac Mini is definitely worth trying out. Once you make the switch you're going to wonder why you even bothered with the slowness of Windows before (aka. no more computer problems).

do you get the keyboard and mighty mouse and leopard with these?

If you buy this, be sure to order another 1GB from Newegg. 1GB is OK, but 2GB+ is better.

Leopard yes, but it's BYO keyboard, mouse and display.

Is this a good computer to run Parallels or VMWare Fusion? If so, is it better to do it with Windows XP or Vista? I bought a MacMini Core Duo with only 512 last year. Also refurbished. I now find that it is not enough hardware to run VMWare Fusion. I also need a more recent version of Tiger.

I also find it a bit slow at times with only 512.

I wonder if it's worth trying to run a virtual machine with Vista if it will only go up to 2 gb.

I made the switch a few years ago. Once I made the switch, I wondered why I even bothered with an apple. Easier to use my foot. #1, you have to have a TON of keyboard shortcuts memorized to effectively use OSX as there are no menu options....unlike windows where you can use keyboard shortcuts, menu bar or rt click if you dont know them. #2, finding software to do what you are used to doing....I mean there is enough out there to do most things you are used to doing, but man, you really have to hunt for some of the stuff. #3, the whole closing a program really doesnt close it thing bugged me. You couldnt just hit the red close the window button cause it just keeps it running in the bar. Turns out it is just a redundant minimize button more or less. It wasnt any faster then a well maintained installation of windows either. Compared to a malware laden 50 million resident application machine, yes, but anything is faster then that. One thing is for sure though, it sure costs more then equivilant PC hardware. Needless to say, I switched right back to windows.

Not trying to start a pissing contest. To each their own. You like OSX, I like windows. No one is making you buy windows any more then me buy OSX. I was just doing a little wondering out loud as to why I even bothered with OSX before.

Not trying to slam you but it sounds like you had a bad OSX experience due to Mac ignorance. Comparing Windows to Mac isn't even fair! When it takes a computer with twice as much ram and system hardware to run as smooth as a Mac does then something is wrong. Just getting rid of virus protection and spyware protection is worth it's weight in gold!

got one. was debateing between this and $499 version. realized the dvd burner and extra hd space were worth it.

Especially considering both parts are not user-upgradable (at least without some serious elbow grease and intestinal fortitude).

LOL @ ignorant mac fanboyism. Windows runs just as well as OSX if you're not a complete idiot and click on all the spyware/viruses. You also don't need to run any virus or spyware protection if you know how to avoid getting any of that in the first place.

Again, I'm not bashing OSX (other than its price point), but there definitely isn't a huge difference between OSX and Windows in performance.

It was one of Apple's best computers. It is so obsolete, hardware wise, that it is not even debatable. I agree that OSX puts substantially less stress on machines but still it does not remove substantial handicap from outdated parts. I upgraded mine with 4GB of RAM and 7200rpm hard drive but video and chipset cannot be upgraded. MacMini is perfectly fine for browsing, music and desktop apps but more and more often I want to play HD video and that's where it starts showing old age. If the price were twice lower I would consider this a hot deal but at current price we expect much more these days.

An operating system is a way of running and organizing a computer. As such, each one is a little different. It comes down to personal preference mostly.

One thing I will note, being both a mac/pc guy, is that I never feel compelled to boot into OSX while in windows. I like the OSX interface more sometimes for its streamlined look (which can be a blessing or a curse depending on the situation), but I'll find at times it's necessary to boot into vmware to run windows programs. OSX does have deficiencies. I think if they fired jobs/ his craze for making fancy gizmos that break every 5 seconds, and turned into a software company, they could give MS a run for their money.

They're basically a software company now, they just won't admit it. They're no longer making their own hardware. Even the iphone was essentially just a clone of prominent chinese phones that were out at the time they decided to start "developing it". They cut serious corners on hardware and that prevents wide adoption since they charge a lot for what you're getting. And Jobb's focus on iCrap line of products has started affecting software too. At present, there's still no mac support for HD-DVD/BR despite the fact it's been out on pc for a couple years now.

Of course, maybe they're scared they'd have to finally make some av software/tighter os if they made it big since OSX's primary security mechanism is through obscurity. You can harden OSX if you know some about computers, but out of the box OSX is actually a lot less secure than people seem to think.

To stay on point, this may be a good deal now but it was better before (bought mine for $500 earlier this year). As a long time pc user who just recently switched to Macs, I must say I'm so glad I did. I even got my sister to switch. I will say that you should max out the memory to 2gb (don't believe it can do 4gb, if it can someone please inform me). I use mine now as my daily machine and my pc is just a file server.

Did you get a refurb 2.0Ghz with a superdrive for $500?
I believe the memory limit on minis is "officially" 2GB, but I think "technically" it's 3.3GB based on the chipset; Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Reference.

Mac Mini isn't very capable? Whoever said that is talking rubbish. It plays 720p and 1080p video just fine connected to my Samsung LCD. And I just have the lowly 1.83ghz c2d version. I upgraded it to 2gb and now it's my media center. So glad to have gotten rid of my Windows media center. Picked it up a few weeks ago on eBay new for $425 after CashBack. Only get the 2ghz model if you need the DVD burner. Speed difference is nothing, and hard drive upgrade you can do later. I put in a 160gb since I was doing ram upgrade anyway....

Plex is what I use for media. The thing FLIES!
