Got an email from Fry's today listing back to school specials including Polk Audio RTi8 Speakers at Frys BM for $149 each (Sold in pairs).

RTi8 specs from Polk Website

Pretty decent price for solid home theater speakers. These are routinely offered for $199 but seldom for less. Appears to be BM only since online shows $199 each. Here is an interesting kicker: the image on the ad is actually that of the RTi10.

RTi10

Braves souls might be able to argue the point and get the RTi10 substituted? That would be a smoking deal.

UPDATE: Price now shows 149 online when added to cart.

Updated price 8/11 5pmEST

i'm sorry i passed when the rti10 deal was going...i dont think the rti8's are enough of an improvement over my r50's. maybe fry's will dig out some rti10's or rti12's...then i'm in

I don't think you'd have a chance at the photo mistake, but dang, at $150 each - that's the best price they've had on the RTi8. That what I paid for my pair from Frys, and I jumped on them as I was worried they'd sell out like the RTi10's did at $200 each. Indeed a day later they were off their product list.

FWIW they have been running the RTi8 for $200, but unlike the R50s, I don't think anyone should try and wait. If you want them, jump on them at the $150 each price - it's a steal!

BTW - I have my RTi8s running as the only 2 speakers on an Onkyo 7.1 receiver. No subwoofer, no surrounds, no video - I just wanted stereo and snagged the Onkyo as a refurb from shoponkyo at a good price. In my room, the bass extends down nearly flat to 32Hz. Those who don't remember "back in the day" when most speakers had deep bass look and look and look for a subwoofer hidden somewhere!

The RTi8s blow away the R50s like night vs. day. I replaced R50s with RTi8's, so I speak from experience. Totally different league of speaker.

For home theater purposes I would probably recommend the RTi8's (which I also own) over the 10's. The mids will be much better. If you are looking for a 2.0 setup for music, go with the 10's.

Red, really? I mean this is no deal of the year, but it is a solid deal. Since when does saving 100 bucks on nice home theater speakers warrant red? Teach me to share

I dunno about some people. This definitely is a green deal as these speakers are on sale for less than their normal clearance discount price ($100 less like you said).

I wonder what premium loudspeakers the red slashers have?

I dont see anywhere that these are $149? Is there any link, all I see is $199

Email says until 8/12 or while supplies last.

Good value, green from me.

Sadly I just setup a 7.1 system, so adding 2 more speakers would probably not work out so hot.

This price came in the "back to school" email from Frys last night. Don't know why the online price is not showing. It does not say BM only, and I have been thinking about calling the 800 # and asking. I am alsothinking about making the 80 mile drive to Frys tomorrow as well.

I have JBL L830 for my fronts right now. If I switch to the Rti8/10 to the front & move the JBL to back, any issues you think?

alert mods

IMHO, speaker matching is largely a myth especially with budget components and subwoofers. The exception might be the center channel being matched to the fronts in some cases. With surrounds and the sub, you should have no issues.

alert mods

Interesting...never thought it about it that way.

ironman69 is correct. The reason you want timbre-matched front & centers is so that as sound (such as a person speaking while walking across the screen) is "moved" from one speaker to another, there is not a difference in the sound qualities (pitch of voice, etc).

If you look at the Polk LSi 15/25 "fronts" and LSiC "center" you can see they use the same physical speakers and tweeters, as well as the LSi 9/7 "surrounds".

But if I just cross the fronts -to create a phantom center - it should not matter between front & rears? that's what I am hearing from you guys.

alert mods

With a phantom center, I see no issue. aedgington is exactly right but IMHO, timber-matching is usually not even a real issue except in cases where the speakers differ drastically in quality. I am running a large BIC center with Polk fronts, and I have never noticed any standout difference. Then again, I like brighter/louder sound coming from center especially in movies with lots of dialogue. I am thinking about order these RTi8's to replace my fronts and move the R50s to the back for a 7.1 setup.

Update: Bit the bullet and called and ordered (wife not happy; well won't be when I tell her . Frys phone service was excellent. Got the $149 price, and they agreed to ship separately to save 20 on shipping costs. Cost me $35 bucks to ship both. Not bad considering the the nearest Frys is 80 miles away: 160 round trip, taking minivan at 20mpg/$4 gallon: 32 bucks to drive Funny how much gas factors into stuff now.
