It's Shuttle barebone $100 AR. Sold out online but I hear plenty at local FRy's.
YES

Did anyone-like me- buy this without looking at the combo deals?

For another $50 you can add this Seagate 320 gb perpendicular recording hdd. It also comes with free ship! Combo price $79.98.

For motherboards, I am no expert but, the thread at SD keeps mentioning the Biostar TFORCE TA790GX. LINK There is a $25 combo discount with this mobo, however the shipping cost for the mobo is $8.97. Combo price: $114.98

EDIT: looks like the $10 promo code for the processor does not work with combo deals, sorry! Prices reflect the edit.

Looked at combo's, but found out the $10 cpu code cannot be used with a combo deal. So that $40 drive is a $50 drive. Had my eye on a $40 combo with a 4G flash drive.

Dam, I should have caught that! Sorry.

Thanks for letting me know!

My 939 MB died, so ordered this CPU hoping this is a good time to upgrade. I hope I can find a good deal on a MB soon (I already got some PC6400 ram from a deal earlier), before the Newegg's return period expires and I find out that the CPU is DOA.

In for 1. Thanks!

Is it common to receive a DOA CPU? I have no way of testing the CPU until I find a good deal on a MB. Of course by that time the CPU will be out of warranty. Should I be worried?

Give me a few symptoms why you think your mobo has died. Who and what model is it?

stevie123 said: Any decent MB deal out there for this chip? I assume this is an AM2 socket?

I like this deal as it is low wattage, so my power supply is not as strained... Also, I guess I can use a cheaper cooler? (Not interested in OCing...)

I'd stick with OEM-style AM2 cooler. Should only run about $15 or so, max.

On the MB, if you want "the best" MATX with onboard video, check the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H or Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H. The latter is marginally faster, because of 128MB onboard video RAM. Price is about $90-$120.

If you want a full size ATX, and you're going to add a regular PCI-E video card later, check the ECS A780GM-A.
The onboard video is adequate to start with. Plus, it's cheaper ($60 AR@NE) and has same energy efficiency as all the other 780G boards.

The 790GX boards are all too new (think buggy) and cost $100-$140.

Well, it wouldn't post and the led diagnostics on the MB suggested that the CPU went bad. As I wasn't going to trust the MB, I took out the CPU and put it in my other desktop which is also 939 and it booted up just fine. So now my secondary desktop got an upgrade (from single core 3000+ to dual core 3800+ and 1gb to 2gb ram and I need to rebuild my primary desktop).

I purchased the MB back in 01/2005 and according to the MSI website, this has a 3yr warranty from the manufactured date (08/2004), however I just realized that AMEX would cover an extra 1yr warranty, and this is right on the margin for a 4yr period so just now called them and setup a claim. This is my first warranty claim with them, so not sure how it will work out. What surprised me is that the warranty is relative to the manufactured date, not purchased date and by the time I purchased the MB, I already lost a few months of warranty (not that it would have mattered here, as it would have been past 3yrs by now anyway).

they jacked the price up 10 dollars. 49 - 10 = $39 now.

can anyone link to a cheap cooling device that will work with this cpu? Is it still a deal at 39 bucks?

Yes it is still a decent deal. The deal was originally $39 after coupon code and then Newegg lowered the price for a day or two to $29 after coupon. This is a very decent deal for a HTPC, energy efficient server or a machine that is used for stuff other than gaming.

It's a good price if you need the cheapest CPU. For more regular use I'd probably start looking at a Black Edition X2. They're basically the same chip except the Black Edition is facotry clocked higher and has an unlocked multiplier. In either case you have to buy a HSF anyway. The Black Edition has the benefit of definitely being able to clock higher and has a lot of room for potential overclock, while also allow you to just underclock/undervolt it to the same specs as the BE2400. It's 30 bucks more but in the long run probably money well spent for a free 25% (stock) to 50% (overclocked) gain in performance through overclocking.

EDIT:

Err it 'was' only about 30 more. Newegg's listing a Black Edition X2 5400+ for 87 now. Thought those things were going for like 72-75 a month ago.

This should clock just as well as the Black Edition. What it does need is better board since you will have to do it by raising the HT. Anyway this should hit 3GHz fairly easily. I am using a Biostar TF-7025 board. One of the best matx boards for overclocking.

This seemed cheap enough that I jumped in to try to build my first PC ever.

Being that I am a newbie, could one of the experts here guide me if this OCZ Vanquisher CPU Cooler Model: OCZTVANQ will work with this CPU.

I have no aspirations to Over Clock. Just want the PC to work

TIA

The Vanquisher should be fine with your CPU.

I was corrected.

The AMD mounting bracket looks like a winner.

The cooler will be fine but the mounting won't work. That model is made for the Intel 775 socket.

no, you can remove those legs for AMD cpu. see n3w3gg linkText

OCZ's own site says the Vanquisher is made for 754/939/AM2 and LGA775. It has a pre-installed LGA775 bracket that can be removed to fit K8 boards.

You guys might consider Shuttle SN68SG2 Socket AM2 Barebone Computer $99 After $100 Rebate at Frys. Sold out on line but plenty available at local Fry's. Rebate ends today. I'm going to grab another 1 today as I bought 2 of these CPUs Sun - price of $28 was AWESOME.

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/853140?highlight_key=y&keyword1=shuttle

Took out AMD 64 3500 CPU from old PC (will replace with X2 BE-2400) and plucked it down to Shuttle barebone and it was breeeze as used old 160GB HD and DVD drives. No need for cooling fan since Shuttle came with their cool proprietary cooling.

49.99 now?

This seems to be alive again...I haven't tried the code as I've already used it, but folks at SD stated that it works. $39.99 - $10 coupon (- Cashbacks of some sort?) = $29.99 + Free shipping + any CashBack.

Also, there seems to be an option of getting a free webcam, so choose $10 or webcam.

how? where?

As one of the bundles. I just saw it mentioned at SD.

Looks like you can only use the code once, I might have to open another Newegg account as I could use another processor.

Too bad no companies have gotten ballsy and made another 'BP6' board allowing you to use 2 low end chips together in a dual CPU system........

secstate said: Looks like you can only use the code once, I might have to open another Newegg account as I could use another processor.

I used the code twice. Once using explorer and 2nd time using Firefox. Or delete the Newegg cookie.

I might get another one. This got to be one of the best CPU deal in a while...

And yeah it's super fast and runs cool.

gave in and bought it.

anyone recommend a stable motherboard to overclock this?

thx.

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G I am sure there are lots of other suggestions, but I went ahead and ordered this one.

Can't do better, but your linking.

nm zzf doesn't like linking

Hehehe...those were the days, right? And just think how much faster a bottom of the barrel sempron would be compared to that pair of 450mhz overclocked cellies!

Seems like an excellent choice. Seems to run linux well as well (some said video is not fully supported, but others said the proprietary driver is good). I compared the specs between zzf and Newegg and found two differences. Newegg says that it supports sata-10, but zzf doesn't. Also, zzf said it has two RJ45 ports (one 10/100 and another for gaga), but Newegg didn't list any.

I was searching for a good Asus board to try their ExpressGate feature, but all their boards seem to be lacking in one way or the other, and they are not even coming up on top, when sorted by user ratings. I might just end up ordering this instead of waiting for a good Asus board. Amazon seems to have it cheaper after considering the tax for CA and shipping.

fixed link

haridsv said: ... but all their boards seem to be lacking in one way or the other, ...
With more & more features onboard and shorter and shorter development/verification time to the market, this is becoming the norm for them mobo makers lately. If you want a perfect board you'll need to spend a lot of time doing research and when the board arrives, conducting your own comprehensive tests to make sure there's no dud on the feature set(s) you purchase the board for. I have caught numerous bugs on a few boards recently and I am pleased with New3gg's generous return policy. I don't know about ZZF's return policy so I can't comment.

Dead? Dead.

Is the stock heatsink/fan for Athlon64 (3000+ socket 754) able to work on this AM2 CPU? Thanks.

Can this be used in place of AMD 64 3200+ 2.21GHz?????

Thanks

TryToBuy said: Can this be used in place of AMD 64 3200+ 2.21GHz?????

Thanks

Depends on the socket of your motherboard. Must be a Socket AM2 or AM2+. I don't recall any 3200+ AM2's but you can download and run cpu-z to verify your socket here.

Thanks pcmax

I will need a new MB then . Is "GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard" for $84.99 from Newegg is a good buy?
