how does this (with a 2gb memory update) compare to the $400 acer deal from officemax performance wise?

AMD in one Intel in the other, Screen size difference, different graphic chip, card reader, web cam in one not ther other etc...

I would call this a warm deal. OD and CC had better deals just last week with a slightly newer processor, bigger hard drive and 2GB RAM for $400 AR. I am sure that similar deals will pop up soon.

I bought this a week ago from Newegg for $420, shipped.

Solid machine. The HD is a Hitachi Travelstar, 5400RPM, 8MB cache.

It has firewire, express card, PCMCIA, 4 USB ports, Gigabit ethernet, 5-in-1 card reader...and you can upgrade it to a Penryn processor (if you want) and up to 4GB RAM (only if running a 64-bit OS). Not many other $400 notebooks offer all of that.

When you first get it, bump it to 2GB (several cheap RAM upgrade deals out there) and you're good for Vista. Otherwise, downgrade it to XP. The 1GB is fine for that.

out of stock

I placed the order and the site was showing the laptop as in stock, later they sent me an e-mail telling me they were out of stock but that they would honor the price if they could get the same item in stock again.

it just showed in stock now? or was this a few hours ago

It's out of stock and they may have tagged it as a "discontinued item", since it's no longer listed, even with an "auto-notify" option.

The Acer Extensa EX5620-4020 is similar model with better specs (2GB RAM and 250GB HD) but the price is still up there ($549).
