It will be better if its SSD but not HD. Just my personal preference.

The SSD alone will probably cost more than the notebook.

Pretty neat netbook. I just got the Eee 1000h from eBay/live.com for like $400.

120gig is great in this model, but I just played with one at CC and the keyboard is a little too small. I'll stick with the 6-cell eee 1000h...if you don't mind not having BT and long battery life, this is a great deal.

I need BT for tethering w/my E71.

This one comes with WinXP. As with all ultraportables, it is better to demo one first before making the purchase.

You can get the Aspire One with 8GB of SSD for less, if you're talking about large SSD's then be prepared to pony up. You can get a OCZ Core 2 64GB SSD and replace the 120GB for <$250 if that's your cup of tea.

It is interesting. Thank you so much for this great info!

no ssd is not better it is slow and runs like crap with windows xp only runs good with linux plus its only 512mb of ram as oppose to 1GB with the windows xp version. This version is the best one to get because the linux version uses the slow Intel SSD. The HDD uses a standard 2.5 inch HDD and can latter be upgraded with a SSD.

A couple of things, I've read, The Ram is 512 on board and 512 in slot, and the slot is hard to get to. so with 512 on board max Ram is 1.5GB. I had read that the key board is pretty good, I'll have to see if there's a comparison to the eee1000.

I don't see a problem for people who need bluetooth, they have little adapters now that I'd bet you could just leave in, even in your case. $10 or so...

I'm planing a long bike trip and allowing @ 4lbs for net book, power supply and 3-256gb drives, I'll keep a linux bootable SD card around incase of drive failure. Silly but I'll also carry an n800 as an MP3 player.

Thanks OP, I've had this backordered for a couple weeks never thought about the MS live CashBack deal (I'm going to loose my Fat Wallet Card if I'm not careful!) I called and checked on stock cancelled my order and reoreder through MS live!

danybui81 said: no ssd is not better it is slow and runs like crap with windows xp ssd is just different, it has some very admirable qualities, take an ssd and a hard drive and throw them up against a brick wall, one has a 99%+ chance of being OK and one has a 99%+ chance of failing.

I've been reading eee forums that XP runs quite nicely off of high speed SD and CF card mods.

Their just different, I choose the HD version for the added storage, Read the onboard SSD is very slow. But given a week I might have bailed on the HD version for the dependability of the ssd, considering the use I have planned.

Just some added info for people interested in this, it comes with a 3 Cell battery so you'll get pretty bad battery life. However you can purchse a 6 Cell battery. NCIXUS has 6 Cell batteries for $118.04 (not in stock yet). Yes it's quite costly but if you factor in that price, you'll still come under the price of a EEE PC 901/1000H/MSI Wind and have a 3 cell battery to boot.

They also have this model listed, with a 6 cell battery for $418.39 (not in stock yet) which would be an excellent price and more along the lines of where these should be priced at.

Also to note, I know the 8gb model has 2 SD card slots, not sure about the 120gb model but that allows a lot of expandability options and allows you to leave one card in for storage while using the other to read your SD cards or you can use both as storage. So if you want pure solid state storage then you could pick up a couple of 8gb cards and stick them in there.

The nice thing about the HDD version is that you could just pick up a 64GB SSD drive and replace the HDD and then use the HDD in an external enclosure where it'd be much safer. You'll then get bettery battery life and better performance.

For $220 + Shipping (AR) you could pick up this drive Click here which is pretty good price. They also have a 32gb version for about $170.

I'm typing this on my 8GB SSD Aspire One, so here's my view.

The Linux/8GB SSD version is great if that's what you want. It has a SDHC card slot that allows you to expand the "hard drive" seamlessly. I have a 16GB (technically unsupported) card in there and it shows the full 24GB as my "hard drive."

The RAM is VERY hard to get to. With Linux, the 512MB seems to be more than adequate. I'd recommend this machine for one of two audiences:

1) It does exactly what I want the way it is, so I plan not to make any changes to it.
or
2) I love to take things apart and don't care about the warranty, and I want to try hacking all kinds of cool stuff.

If you're inbetween (I want more than the standard config, but I'm not teh hax0r,) then you should probably look at the MSI Wind.

You can find out more about what people are saying at aspireoneuser.com in the forums.

Personally, I like the 512MB/8GB/Linux version that I have. The marginally smaller keyboard and side-button trackpad take a little getting used to, but otherwise, it's a great "throw it open and get on the net" computer.

or if your into detailed DIY video instructions for adding memory, putting bluetooth, changing the HDD, or even adding a 3G chip, check out ASPIRE ONE MODDING BLUETOOTH AND MEMORY and ASPIRE ONE HDD CHANGE AND PUTTING IT ALL BACK TOGETHER

Highly recommend vids. I just did the bluetooth and memory on mine. And this chick is the ish at doing this. I had no clue until I saw this site on how to upgrade my aspire one.

Thanks OP I got one!

On the Linux version on demo at CC, I couldn't get the trackpad to scroll horizontally or vertically - am I missing something? Not being able to scroll is a dealbreaker for me.

The horizontal and vertical scrolling can be turned off in software. The unit you used probably had it turned off.

Side note, it also supports circular scrolling (kinda like scrolling on the iPod wheel)

Heading does not state the store.
Which is?

Got 1. thanks OP

Thanks OP, I just bought one.

In 4 1 with GCO, thanks OP. Btw, does GCO qualify for the rebate?

Rebate? You mean the 12% MS Live Search CashBack? I think it should work. I know paypal worked fine with live.com so I assumed there shouldn't be any problem with GCO. To be safe, sign in to your live.com account first before you click on the J&R link.

Nice deal for for the XP model..... I have the 512/ 8 gb SSd model now and I love it, but I was hoping to use it to access my company VPN and I can't get a NORTEL Linux VPN client.

Count me in for one too!

your post is pointless, and doesn't add anything
here is a 32 gig SSD, not 120 gig like the system has OH ITS 400 bucks.
http://www.Newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147053

it will be at least a year probably more before they get anywhere near reasonable.

64gig SSD = $219 AR

Upon further reading, it may be a slow drive...?

How's this Acer compared to the Asus eeePC with 8.9" screen?

LongDongSilver said: How's this Acer compared to the Asus eeePC with 8.9" screen?

PC Magazine essentially declared it a wash; both great, both great prices, but the Acer in the end by a margin.

I can't stand the low battery life..

Stay away from this deal

ruysnr said: I can't stand the low battery life.. // Stay away from this deal

I thought it was mentioned earlier that there is a 6-7 hour battery (more likely a 5-6 hour battery with a HD based unit) available, for @ $100 brings the cost up to @ $500, don't think you can get the competion with as long a battery life for the same $$$

I have the Acer (with 6cell battery) and an Eee 1000H (10 inch model, which has an even bigger battery), and the Acer has way better runtime right out of box (without ajusting any settings). 6 hours is easily achieved and maybe even 7 (never tried yet). And never get hot. Only knock is keyboard width which could be wider but it is still manageable if you bring fingers closer.

This is an awesome deal.

On the subject of SSD vs. HD, while running Windows the SSD used by Acer and Eee are all slower than HD. Putting files on SSD is also slow. So after testing all 4 (Acer SSD vs. HD, Eee SSD vs. HD) I went with HD in both. SSD may be good for anti vibration, but if vibration is that bad, you are not going to be able to type or see much from the little LCD. And according to spec SSD does not consume any less battery than HD. I know it makes no sense (since SSD doesnt spin or seek like HD), but so far it has not come out ahead of HD in speed or power consumption (at least in this particular Acer).

I can't seem to proceed to checkout, is there something wrong w/ my browser? or is it JR?? =/

Nope, both IE and FF worked fine. The site may have a slow down here and there but should be working fine now.

strange
ive tried both firefox and ie,
firefox wouldnt let me pass the billing page, IE gets stuck right after billing/shipping page.

I'm going through MSN live if that makes any difference.

This looks to be a deal I want to take advantage of. However I am not a fatwallet pro and can not figure out how this CashBack works. Can someone walk me though it for this product?

just sign up at the msn live link given above.
then read this http://search.live.com/CashBack/howToUse

It's fine, I just try both again, through MS Live Search. Got to the final stage (Complete Order). You could try another computer so see if that help.

i finally got it to work with another computer
thanks OP
(time to upgrade that older pos now )

I love it so far, except 6 cell battery claims 7.5 hours, expect about 4 hours. and the screen isn't as bright and clear as I'd like it to be, but for $500, I can't complain. Got in on the 2.5inch 320gb hd from Buy.com for $87 and hdcloned it for a pretty good system. Touchpad could also use a little work in my opinion, but overall, I'm happy for $500 ultraportable.

Might reconsider the aspire one, they have anounce a 6 cell version 1gb ram 120 or 160gb HD version at $399, the screen is fine (great veiw ability side to side, less range up and down) The extended battery is/will be soon around $100 on some canada site now for preorder. Either way I would check out Simple 250gb portable HD's if you missed out at $30 closeout at BB look on eBay. I've picked up severeral for $50-55 each new sealed from people reselling them, keep checking, nothing currently less than $70 but check the history and you'll find sellers selling 5-10 at a time.

Too bad you can't boot from the SD slot on the HD version, but I'll have a linux usb bootable incase the HD fails.
