I was just diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis by my podiatrist (apparently very common, he says), and he told me I need to get good shoes...He specifically recommended the Brooks Addiction and the Adrenaline models, but they are usually about $90-$100 each. It's surprising that your podiatrist didn't recommend custom footbeds that are inserted in shoes for your Plantar Fasciitis. Unless you can wear running shoes for all occasions these shoes aren't going to be a long-term solution imo. I wore footbeds for a year in all my shoes or wore Dansko clogs, did the recommended stretching/exercises, lost weight and haven't had the problem again. Best of luck to you. =)

Brooks shoes are great. I run with the Brooks Glycerin 6. Just as a heads up, the products that are in this post are 2007 models. You have to pay more to get the latest and greatest, which are the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8 (about 95 dollars) and Brooks Addiction 8 (about 100 dollars). The 7 models aren't bad though at this price.
