this is a fantastic deal if all goes through smoothly - I have been looking for a good BR player and media streamer so I could care less about the gaming part (no PS2 compatability etc...) - with 3% Cash Back, $150 off the price and interest free for 1 year - I could not pass it up. Maybe I'll even start to play games too once it arrives. It is interesting that the SonyStyle website does not have any in stock as of today but Amazon and a few other retailers do - it was on "pre-order" status yesterday. Anyway great post OP. |

There are two version of 80G PS3. If you visit the SonyStyle, there are $399 80G PS3 (PS398013) and $499 80G PS3 with MGS bundle (PS398011). While MGS bundle version ($499) has backward compatibility with PS2 games, 80G PS3 version ($399) does not have backward compatibiilty. If you want PS3 with backward compatibility, you should buy MGS bundle. |

You are ignoring the most important part on the 80 GB MGS bundle. From the SonyStyle store: Currently Out of Stock |

FWF thread
if this is considered hot, you can also make threads to buy 360s, ipods, laptops, lcds for 150 less WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG, read the terms:
Your first single sales receipt purchase made at a SonyStyle store, including SonyStyle.com equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") will automatically qualify you for a $150 Statement Credit. |

Maybe off topic, but how good is the PS3 as a media center? specifically streaming various formats from your computer? how does it compare to the xbox 360? BTW this is a good deal, my bro just bought the MGS pack, but is realizing he doesnt need backwards compatibility. He's kicking himself now. |

I don't think that's off topic and my speculation (I just jumped on this deal) is, "How bad can it be?" It's a blu-ray player with an 80g disk and a network connection for updates. It has a web browser and, btw, plays pretty good games. I went with the non-bc version because it was cheaper and quieter. It probably uses less juice too which may mean a longer mtbf. We still have a PS2 and I'm ok with keeping it around for the old games. Heck, I still have an Atari around for *really* old gems (Wizard of War, for instance). I don't see how you can go wrong for $250. |

Apply for Sony card today and purchase today. Twelve month no interest so I can wait until I get credited the $150 and make payment after that. The 80gb is "software compatible" with PS2 games.
My total was about $418 (including tax) and free shipping. This is not the backwards compatible 80GB, this is the exact same as the 40GB, just with a bigger hard drive. |

If you have a discover card with available Cash Back, you can purchase $50 SonyStyle GC for $40 or a $80 for $60. Only restriction is you can only use one GC per purchase at sonysytle.com Bottom line: I saved an extra $10 on my PS3 purchase. $378 (sales tax included) after GC - minus $150 Sony credit card credit - minus 3% fatwallet cb ========================== Good deal. |

Guys this is the NEW 80gb model... So it doesn't have PS2 backwards compatibility (BC) it just has PS1 BC. The new 80GB model is replacing the now discontinued 40GB model with a bigger hard drive and the Dualshock 3 controller. It also has a 65nm RSX chip so it draws even less power than the 40GB model did (around 110w at idle now). It's $399 retail. The old 80GB model with PS2 BC is being replaced with a 160GB hard drive around the same time and will be $499 retail as the old 80GB model was before it. Hope that clears up some comments. |

@Phonger How good is PS3 has a media center? I'd say PS3 is the best media center there is. It plays Blu-ray movies (with profile 2.0 support), DVD up-coverting, supports DIVX/XVID playback, can stream videos/pics/music with visualizations (there are a ton of free UPNP servers out, I use fuppes), web browser with flash support, runs extremely quiet, has built in WiFi and has HDMI 1.3 output. Also you can buy a Bluetooth remote if you don't like using the wireless controller for everything. And unlike the Xbox will never RROD. And of course it has a ton of great game games to play with free online gaming unlike it's competitor. I love my PS3. |

I'm seeing $40 for a $50 card, or $80 for a $100 card. Your Discover card must have a better deal than mine does. Neat find though, I can finally use my Discover card rewards for something. |

so i just applied for the card: I called Sony style about the backorder, the rep said they are backordered until christas - i think he's full of crap, but it could be a really long time before it gets back in stock. I'm not really in a rush to get the PS3, BUT - the Sony card requires you make your 299 purchase within 45 days: now my dilemma - do I wait for the card to come and buy it in store (its only in stock at ONE of the 3 stores in my area) or do I purchase it online, betting on the fact that they'll charge me (ie ship to me) within 45 days. what do you guys think? |

Wait for the card to come in the mail and then check the website in Sept for stock status so you can get in on the 3% Cash Back and free shipping. If you get close to the 45 days (around day 35-40, near the end of Sept) and the website still doesnt have stock then drive over to the store and buy it there Highly doubt Sony would short hand their own site & stores until Christmas to fulfill retail store requests from BB/CC/EBgames/etc I have a Xbox 360 ($200 from Micro Center back in Dec 06), but now I'm also looking to pickup a PS3 since this deal is pretty good and I'm looking to play some PS3 games
I'm going to apply for the card soon before they pull the offer and I'll probably hold off on buying the PS3 until the end of Sept just incase the price drops a little (if the 360 prices will drop early Sept then theres a chance that Sony might have to discount the PS3 a little or offer something for free along with the console purchase) so I'll just wait it out for a month since I'm definitely not in a hurry |

that's smart! I was just afraid if I didn't jump at the card, they would pull the deal. I noticed the back order online and the OOS at the south coast and bev center stores and got paranoid about how they found out about this deal and wanted to end it. So i wanted to get it done ASAP. Do you think Sony will drop the price again? I know they are releasing the 160 gb one soon, in oct. who knows! |

Nice deal, I'm tempted. Too bad there's not really any game I'd REALLY wanted for it. So far Xbox360 and Wii has enough games to play. As for Blu-Ray, I'm still buying the bargain movies for the HDDVD, and I find it hard to imagine I'd pay some 2-4x more money for same quality movies. So I guess I'll pass, and hope I get similar deal when the BD movies are at least a bit cheaper. Current prices are just stupid. On the other hand, knowing how much money Sony spent on BD, and knowing they like to get the money back from movie sales, I'd say the BD prices are not dropping anytime soon. Before that, I'd almost bet there is already good enough online HD-streaming services, so I might even skip the BD. If not for anything else, at least I'd make my own one man quiet protest against Sony for slaying out the competitor, which in my opinion, was better choice for consumer. Too bad I know someday I will buy PS3 for gaming purpose, and after that, I'm sure I will catch some good BD deals now and then. But if e.g. the Netflix+Xbox360 would make it work good and with nice selection, that might be the best thing in the movie service business in the coming years. |

who knows!Just get the card now and you'll have ~5 weeks to decide. I'm hoping for a price drop which probably wont happen or maybe a freebie thrown in like the remote control or something lol
