I never really understood what is the deal with these barebones server deals... What makes it a deal? Is it the Motherboard, is it the Power Supply, is it the Network Adapter? The parameters look weak otherwise...

8+ months ago, it might be a great deal. Now, I think it's just warm since the Core 2 and Quad Core are out. The main reason that the people buy these are for server usage -- they are very reliable.

Actually more people get these to use as a very reliable desktop. They are quiet and as the other post mentions very reliable. I am still using the 3 400SC units that I got several years ago.

I bought one of these in the last deal about a month ago. Then I found that
- This machine takes only ECC RAM, no non-ECC RAM
- To add a video card, you need to cut the 4x PCI-e slot (I haven't done that yet)
- There is no sound card, you need to add one.

Figures the inevitable "why is this called a server" and "it sucks since I can't put a *insert hardware item* in it" would come back up. This was not intended as a desktop people, so quit B&M'ing over that! (If you are using it as such and aren't complaining, cool) This is an entry level server for small business use, this isn't for a datacenter or a freakin' Fortune 500 company. It fits the segment of the market that wants an inexpensive, decent, reliable server for light server use and doesn't want to spend $2000+ in order to do it. I honestly don't see why it's that hard to understand. Certain things like the warranty and other semi-intangibles are hard to put a $$$ sign on. Some companies don't want to or don't have someone who can build a custom box. I'd almost wish some MOD's would start clamping down on the useless prattle I mentioned in the first sentence.

Lack of RAID decreases the usefulness of this server somewhat. I guess you can do software RAID, but that just think a server these days should at least come with RAID1 capabilities that are compatible with all major operating systems, including the major *nix distros.

Same here. I got my 400sc over 5 years ago and I use it every day. I recommend these servers every chance I get.

Just because you can, doesn't make it a good idea. Your desktop needs likely would have been better served with a desktop computer during these same 5 years.

just like all Dell server, you can surely get a raid setup. You add the raid card when building the unit. Cards that cost high costs, do you think they are going to be throwing these cards into a $300 box for free? Ha - thats the cost of the card.

Why would I not go to this deal and for $10 more get same CPU, but with bigger drive, more memory, DVD burner, sound, keyboard/mouse, etc? OK, no gigabit ethernet, but if you intend to use it as a desktop anyway, 10/100 is perfectly fine.

They had this exact computer about a year ago for $50 cheaper. Strange that the same computer for a higher price.

I liken the 2 systems as being the same size, from a shipping perspective, yet the SC440 is $19 and the Inspiron is $35 - how does that compute?

I have a few 400SC's. The 400SC was different than the current server lineups. The 400SC was essentually a server grade desktop computer - that they sold as a lowend server. With the 400SC, you could use regular RAM, regular video cards, etc... infact, it had the same motherboard as the highend dimensions at the time. This is not the case with the current PowerEdge deals. That's why they cannot be compared. These can be used as a desktop if you can deal with the limitations... and the warranty is killer.

Anyone purchasing this and planning to add a RAID card after the fact? If so, any suggestions for type of card?

Thanks

add both of these to your server:

Add-in SAS5iR (SATA/SAS Controller) supports 2 Hard Drives - RAID 1
SAS 5IR internal RAID adapter, PCI-Express

Actually, I am looking to purchase after. If I purchase now, then I will also have to add another hard drive. I already have 2 hard drives to use, so want to just purchase a raid card after.
