But it's a great deal.
Just as a quick reminder, this comes with Ubuntu OS.

Well, not exactly, it's 2 gigs of RAM now.

$35 shipping kills it for me.

Really? $35 shipping kills it? You're already dead.

Nice deal but the shipping kills it.

So, you're telling me that if it was, say, $424 with free shipping you would think about it more seriously?!!

No, only if it was $399 w/free shipping

Think so, as $424 w/ free shipping is $10 less than $399 w/ $35 shipping.

May be not exactly, as you pay tax on $424 rather than 399, so the actual difference is ~$7.

no windows operating system?

will windows have any problems with the hardware?

No, you'll be fine if you wipe the drive, or if you decide to dual-boot. This hardware is generic and will support whatever you want, minus the Mac OS (only because of the EULA).

c

how do I get free shipping?

can't get FS even if I order 5 in one order shipping kills the deal

Someone offered me a Mercedes and a BMW for $100 but wanted to charge $35 for delivery. I said "hell no I ain't paying that...I ain't no sucka!" I put an end to that $35 dollar delivery charge ; )

please stop this shipping BS

Good deal Happy OP, but shipping kills the deal

The price comes up as $459 not $399 for me.

Remove the monitor

how does shipping kill this deal -- it's still $399 for a desktop with quad core and all the other decent specs -- do you guys even ever buy anything, or u just wait for that one error on the site when stuff is free and jump on it?

Upgrades would be

1) HDD...from 250GB to 1TB
2) RAM.... to 4GB
3) OS to WinXP
4) Add HDTV card

Look like another $500 more.

I removed the monitor and it came out to $293.18 with tax and shipping.

What the heck is UBUNTU 8.04 operating system?

You might also want to upgrade the cpu to the Quad Core Q6600 as the OP suggests.
It's a good upgrade for the price difference.

UBUNTU means 'humanity' in the Zulu language, as the OS was developed in South Africa.
It's the easiest Linux OS to get in to and is distributed free, except for the tech support and some premium features.
Give it a try.

How does this system compare to the one below. Which is better,by much or little?

Dell Inspiron 530S (slim model)
Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Processor Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor E2200
Processor Speed 2.2GHz
RAM Installed / Max RAM Supported 3GB DDR2-667 RAM (Not Expandable)
Hard Drive 500GB 7,200RPM Serial ATA II Hard Drive
Multimedia Drive Double Layer 16x DVD±RW Drive
Monitor Type Display Not Included
Modem/Communications Device 56K Fax/Modem
Memory Card Reader 19-in-1 Media Card Reader
Input Device USB Keyboard, USB 2-Button Mouse
Included Software Microsoft Works 9.0, Dell Solution Center Software, Image Restore Software
Manufacturer Warranty 90 Day Limited Warranty

I don't recommend the Slim since it makes upgrading certain parts annoying as hell.

Or just try the OS. I heard it's pretty good and got wide support from applications, though I have not tried one myself. Also, the developers are working on the Media Center version.

Ubuntu is pretty good. Looks almost like a cheap version of Windows, but more stable. I love it, and I was using it for a while (until I have to sell my toy laptop). I still have to use XP now for my work laptop.

this is a warm deal. it actually works well with the original 2ghz processor, that can be easily oced to 2.66 with a bsel mod. the q6600 goes for around 180 right now, so I am not sure if 160 is worth the upgrade or not. Of course the advantage is that you dont have to swap processors.
This comes with a slightly larger hd (250) and memmory (2gigs) than some of the q6600 deals floating in the past, but without windows, and without free shipping. Warm deal.

The one I mentioned is refurbished and the price is $389 at microcenter.

Not sure if this is the case with all Dells but the ones I bought with q6600 have Seasonic 350w psu but a couple of lower spec Core 2 Duo machines came with 300w psu. The 350w is generally regarded as being beefy enough to run decent video cards.

Just ordered one with D2C CPU (2.0GHz) and without monitor. It came out to $293.18 with tax and shipping.

Thanks, OP.

Hey Guys, is the Q9300 worth the $100 above the Q6600, especially in light of the easy overclocking you can do with the Q6600?

Thanks,
Jim

does anyone know the max ram this will take and pci/pcie slots availiable?

Great deal, thanks!

BTW: It comes out to $396.39 for me (incl tax + shipping).

thanks fellas!!! just got 2 of these for the kids. both had old dimensions i got a few years ago from new installs i had done. they will be thrilled. jeez can't beat the price.

Thanks OP! Bought 2, came out about $450 each after everything and shipped to CA

Does anyone know how many hard drives can be added to this? I'm looking to build a Home Media Server so a total of three hard drives would be ideal.

Edit: Answered my own question.

There is no longer an option to remove the monitor, so this deal is dead (for now),
