Zoom lens - 17 mm - 85 mm - f/4.0-5.6 IS USM Canon EF-S

The kit I bought came with the 28-135mm which is normally a better reviewed lens with an F-stop range of 3.5 - 5.6. Amazon has that kit for $1145 and if you can pull off the gold box trick you save another 5% or $57 bringing it down to $1088.

I would rather have a 17-85mm just not this 17-85mm.

I sold my kit lens anyway.

EDIT: The WalMart page lists the kit as having the 17-85 in one place and also lists the 28-135 in another. I would assume you get the 28-135 with thsi kit.

Also, this is only available through WalMart on line so YMMV on the price match.

Yes, I have owned the 17-55, and yes, it has better optics, and is 1-2 stops faster. It also runs close to 1 K. It is the best walk around lens available for 40D. However, a fairer comparison will be something like the tamron 17-50 2.8. Optically excellent, but without IS. Again, if you are going to sell the lens, 17-85 will on average fetch you 50 bucks more than the 28-135.
I would say honestly the 18-55 IS kit lens is a better value than the 17-85.

There will always be successors. Honestly there is not a ton that they can improve on in this camera. the fps is 6.5. Canon will not have weather sealing in their non pro line, and to most its irrelevant anyway. MP at 10 is the sweet spot of the 1.6x crop sensor, and I dont see any significant improvement in the high ISO images for this size sensor, with the this pixel density.

Range, the 17-85 is much better on a crop sensor (like the 40D). It also has a better IS system. Image quality, 28-135 is consistently mediocre, while 17-85 is bad from 17-24, and good from 24-85. On the wide end, it has a lot of chromatic aberration. the New canon software fixes that though. also the edges are fairly soft. Its center resolution in my experience is very good through out the rang. The lens is also has a resell value of 50 bucks more.

There will always be successors, this one just happens to be likely coming out in the next 1-3 months.

The 17-85mm lens is unquestionably superior in the 17-28mm range.

The 28-135mm lens is vastly superior in the 85-135mm range.

There are other differences, but those are likely the ones that are the most significant for many people.
