Actually, my vague understanding from the news I've read suggests that the small high-efficiency cars are all selling like crazy - and discounts are harder to come by. Looking at that website (that's a great website, btw, thank you!), almost all the Civics from this year are at or above invoice.
And, I wonder if you can still haggle from this base price. i.e. if the sticker price is $20K and the dealer sends you an email saying they're on sale for $invoice-$500=18K, do I lose my leverage or can I still push the dealer down to 16K?
The only price you should ask dealer about is OTD (out-the-door) price. "Under invoice" means nothing, when they start adding fees, rebate taxes and charge you $500 for paint protection. You can use that email if you have prenegotiated price, otherwise it's BS, sorry. My Honda came with a $2000 dealer's loss on paper (for IRS), but he was still happy to get my money getting more another way.

You can offer them whatever you want....just be prepared to walkout if you get rejected.... many people fall in love with the car and will take pennies off to make the deal....and they know it.
The Civic DX Coupe with manual retails around $14800.....but for that you don't even get life support neccesities a/c or power win.

google this...Honda settlement. Honda quality is not as good as you believe to be. Plus Honda is very sneaky; they will not recall their defective products.

The name of the game is to shop around and do your research before buying, just like any other purchase.

Never trust a car dealer and a mechanic. There are usually 2 invoices they carry, one is the real one that you will never see. The other one is for you to get excited about your screaming deal!

On the Accords, I was getting some offers supposedly in the low 18k's

The best deal is the Friday morning "loss leader". This is where dealers advertise 1 to 3 "at this price" Usually they are base or midline models but sometimes they have higher end models too.
I bought my 05 Corolla S this way. It was fully loaded, with 6 CD changer and premium sound. It was listed 2 at this price. The finance closer said he was shocked to see it go for $3k under the usual price. It averages me 31 mpg, which I am very happy with.

There was a really good article in the Money magazine last year that talked about how you can get the best deal on your new cars. There are some really good pointers in there... I hope it helps.
Yes, Honda doesn't want to hurt its resale value. So, they hardly offer any direct cash to consumers like Nissan or most American manufacturers. You could get a new '07 Accord for 4-5K under invoice last July-Aug but you could only find about 2K in marketing support (they didn't even advertise it as cash to consumers).
Toyota (BMW) is also offering secretive incentives similar to Honda.
McGrath is an awesome dealership. I got my 08 Civic Ex sedan back in April, and I love it. I got it for $400 under invoice then. Tony Segarra is a cool salesguy, friendly and low pressure. I also got $100 over KBB value on my trade. No tricks, in and out in just over 2 hours.

$500 under invoice for the civic is not extraordinary. I helped someone pick up an 08 civic at $300 off invoice and $200 worth of free accessories back in May. They also have the 1.9% finance promotion back then. Considering it's August of 08, I would expect it to be closer to $800-$1000 below invoice.
I got the civic lx 2008 this March for 18250(out to door price). I dont know if i got a good deal I am in Bridgewater, NJ. Just posting, so that you guys could bargain even more !!!

Make sure you look up the invoice price online before walking into the dealership. I've had a salesman for a Toyota Corolla tell me that they're selling at invoice, although he tacked on about $500 of "required" marketing charges. Better yet, don't even mention the word invoice so that they won't have a chance to show you a false pricing statement. Bring a calculator, ask the salesman for the exact cost of license/registration, calculate the total out the door price yourself, and then ask for it. This way, there's no time wasted on confusion and turning down useless upgrades and parts that they usually try to throw in.

Thanks. What about # of Doors? Automatic? Any extras?
This comment is for regular buyers not super FWers. I have read all posts and have been lucky in many deals but not in cars. I bought in auction Corolla LE 2009 with 952 miles for 15300. It had a dent on it. I had to pay on top of it 200 dollars auction fees, some 65 dollars towing to dealer, another 70 dollars for entry to auction place and some processing charges. 700 dollars take the dent off. Now the car is for 17619.63 after Tax Tag and title. I found one tire was different than OEM and did not have one key plus a little ding in wind screen with missing mats added on top. This is not to discourage anyone, and last year I bought Honda Accord VP on road with all included for 19400 from dealer around invoice price (2007 model when 2008 was coming in August). I had to add speakers for 100 later on because it does not come with speakers.
I highly recommend anyone looking at a Civic take a look at a 2007 or later Elantra. My wife who initially wanted nothing to do with a Hyundai is now driving the 2007 Elantra we bought while I am now driving our Accord.

I got 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid in June for $20500-$1000 tax rebate I will get in 2009=$19500. I didn't get the GPS etc.

The paint protection is truly laughable. Now that clear coat has been standard for many years, what is paint protection anyway? Do they actually apply *anything*, or merely write it on the dealer invoice?
is there a better time of year to shop honda? does it fall on the same time every year or do i need to watch out for promos?
looking to get a new/demo/display model of honda accord. i've had best luck with hondas so far, probably has to do with an outstanding service center we have here locally. i've not had once problem with them where they cheated in some or any way. they also have a dealership and those guys come from a different planet. suffice it to say i'm not buying my cars from them
long story short, i wonder when's the best time to buy a honda if there is a better time for that.
Edmunds and the other popular 'pricing' services are basically scams promoted by NADA to fool you into believing you're getting a good deal.
There are 'trade secrets' and 'proprietary information' you'll never hear or know about when it comes to holdbacks and other incentive cash dealers receive from manufacturers, sometimes amounting to thousands on the hood per unit, that you will NEVER know about as a consumer (unless you have an immediate family member or very good friend who is in a managerial position at a dealer).
So, invoice prices are, for all practical purposes, an antiquated and meaningless benchmark when attempting to verify whether your 'good deal' was good, after all.
praladh said: I have negotiated 2009 Honda Civic LX for $17300. OTD price would be ~ $17500 as there is no sales tax. Do you think this a good deal or I should negotiate more.
That is a great deal. I am looking at the DX-VP model for about $17k, don't know how much I can negiogate any lower.
