Radio Shack has the Zenith (made by LG) DTT901 Digital TV Tuner Converter Box with analog passthru for $59.99. They DO have the DTT901s even though the web site still shows the DTT900. These are available in B&M stores only.

Use a $40 coupon from the "TV Converter Box Coupon Program" plus a Radio Shack $10 off $40 coupon from the current 2008 Entertainment Book and the final price is $9.99 plus tax. Unlike some stores (I've heard rumors about Circuit City!) in California, Radio Shack only charges tax on the after coupons price.

Somewhat YMMV since some Radio Shack managers won't allow usage of two coupons on an item.

I just bought two boxes and used two of each coupon all on the same receipt. My total was $21.52 after California tax (7.75%). Mine have a manufacture date of July, 2008, in case that makes a difference to anyone.

As a bonus, two new $10 off $40 coupons (good until 9/28/2008) printed out!

I did a title search for DTT901 and couldn't find anything (which surprised me!) Sorry if this is a repost.

Update: Easier deal (Only $40 NTIA coupon required) at Kmart described here.

Probably shouldn't include the $10 off $40 in the title final price. That is not a freely available coupon.

I know nothing about how to determine what is a good tuner converter box, but I'd like to get a couple for use in the RV or other place w/o cable.
Any comments from people who have this box?

I use this at home, so can't comment on an RV environment.

But 901 's one of the more reliable box with a few unique features that others dont' have. One is, it remembers the Zoom setting for each and different channel. So you can set Ch4 to 16:9, and Ch7 to 4:3, and it will always remember it when you switch back and forth. You can't find other boxes with this feature easily.

Another thing is, this box runs cool. It is hardly warm at all as you use it. You can't say the same with other boxes
that people recommend to you. So quality wise, it seems better designed.

And it's picture quality is well regarded as one of the best.

If you want a reliable box, this is the one to get.

Edit 8/27/2008: I just hooked these up, one to a TV with "rabbit ears" the other to a TV with an attic/roof (in the attic) antenna. Set up was VERY easy. I'm getting 56 channels on each TV! A few of the channels require me to adjust the rabbit ears to get them to come in, but these happen to be channels in which I have no interest. Channel 2 (CBS) has always come in fuzzy over the air, and comes in clear using the converter box (which is what I expected after reading other comments about these boxes).

My local RS did not accept the Entertainment book coupon with the $40 converter coupon so this is YMMV. Purchased the converter box just the same since my coupons were expiring.

One thing's for sure, you'll need an override at the register with manager approval. And if you want to argue about $10, go for it, and good luck.

Actually, I called and asked before going. The sales person asked the manager, who wasn't sure, and said to "try it" and if the register took it, he'd allow it. The sales person had to try a few things to get it to work, but no manager override was needed unless she did that without having to get the manager. So yes, it is YMMV.

I had emailed Radio Shack and asked about the policy before going. Here's their response:

"Dear George,

Thank you for contacting RadioShack.com.

We apologize for any confusion. If neither of the coupons states, "can
not be used with other promotion or discount", then you will be able to
use both. If you are not able to use both on the website order, please
call Customer Relations at 1-800-843-7422 and they will help you to use
the coupons. Thank you for your understanding.

If you have additional questions, please visit our online Help Desk.
Thank you again for contacting us.

Sincerely,
Chris B

I got the response after making the purchase, and I don't remember the wording on the $10 off $40 entertainment book coupons.

Just checked and the wording on the Entertainment coupon is "May not be combined with any other discount offer". But in my opinion, that usually means a Radio Shack sale or coupon. If RS is getting the full $40 from the govt, why shouldn't they honor their own discount coupon?

I used the entertainment coupon and the $40 gov coupon at the Radio Shack in Irving TX and they didn't say a word about it. It scanned fine and I ended up paying $9.99 + tax. The register even printed out another $10 off $40 coupon to use on a future purchase. They didn't have the zenith though. They carried the digital stream dtx9950, which I actually like better than the zenith.

I was told that with the $10 off $40, govt coupon, and one box, the total was not over the $40 min for $10 off $40. Then asked if I bought 2 boxes, would that get me over the minimum (which it would). They said $10 off $40 cannot be combined with any other offers. Didn't make sense to me, but no go at the local RS.

I look at the NTIA "coupon" as more of a gov't voucher than a coupon since the NTIA is giving the vendor $40. It's kind of like using a gift card for part of the payment, and your credit card / check / cash for the rest.

In my case, the salesperson was nice enough to use the $10 off $40 coupon before the NTIA coupon, thus avoiding the "not over $40" issue.

my govt coupon expired. Has anyone had any luck getting them replaced?

They go by address. If you have a nice neighbor that doesn't need them, you can order two more for that address.

Edit: Since you said coupon (singular), I think you can order a second coupon.

No luck at two different stores in Ohio - wouldn't combine coupons. And, neither carried the Zenith anymore because they "couldn't keep it stocked" due to popularity.

A manager from one of the stores said she couldn't combine the discounts because "Radio Shack, Best Buy, and WalMart already paid the government to cover the cost of the $40 credits."
